Show Residents in Southern Utah will have an opportunity oppor-tunity to see a steam locomotive lo-comotive running on the Union Pacific Railroad this month for the first time in 24 years. UP is sending its famed steam locomotive No. 8444 to Las Vegas where it will take part in the 75th anniversary anni-versary celebration of the founding of the Nevada City with the coming of the railroad rail-road May 15, 1905. The locomotive will arrive ar-rive in Milford on the eventing event-ing of May 13, on its way south from Salt Lake City. Members of the U.P. Old Timers Club in Milford Mil-ford will be on hand to show the engine to the pub -r lie. The engine will depart Milford the next morning for Las Vegas. The engine will return re-turn to Milford May 18, where it will stay overnight over-night before continuing to Salt Lake. It will be pulling public excursion trains May 24 and 25 between betwe-en Salt Lake and Provo. Milford will celebrate 100 years of railroading on July 11 and 12, with a Railroad Centennial Celebration. Cele-bration. Plans are being made for a gala celebration, celebra-tion, featuring Union Pacific Pa-cific Family Days. The union Pacific will bring a locomotive and pas -senger train for special rides, their miniature train and quartet. A huge parade is planned, and many other special events will highlight high-light the two days. Many reunions are being be-ing planned by alumni of Milford High School for the two days, as well as dances and other entertainment. enter-tainment. The celebration is being planned by a committee headed by Norman Lamb. The two days will be sponsored spon-sored jointly by the Jr. Old Timers, Old Timers Club and the Milford His-' torical Society. The event will honor the extension of the Ogden to Salt Lake Railroad to So. Utah to tap the rich mines and haul the ore to smelters smelt-ers in the north. From 1880 to 1885 Milford was the end of the line and became be-came a freight center, with teams and wagons hauling freight from the railroad throughout Southern Utah, Arizona and Nevada. A branch line was soon extended ex-tended to the Horn Silver Mine and Old Frisco, and later to Newhousg. |
