In Cache County, Dean Ro-well, Ro-well, Salt Lake City, filed leases in 7 townships in a north -south direction in the Bear River Range east of Logan. He also filed on more than 85,000 acres in the west-em west-em portion of Sevier, Sanpete, San-pete, Piute and several coun -ties. Some 52,000 acres were filed on byRowellintheCove Fort vicinity of Millard County. The oil and gas lease play has now reached proportions of over 1,400,000 acres scattered scat-tered largely through the western half of Utah. The apparent oil discovery by Northwest Exploration Co.'s No. 1 Trap Springs south of Ely, Nevada in the Eagle Springs area, is credited with stimulating the leasing activity in Utah. Northwest Exploration announced earlier earl-ier that it had recovered oil on separate tests between 4,200, and 4,800 feet at the well. Delbert Grote, Denver, immediately filed oil and gas leases on 134,273 acres of federal land in Millard and Beaver counties. Then, last week, more than 344,000 acres were covered in the lease play. Jerry Hill, aDen-ver aDen-ver independent, filed applications appli-cations on 203,000 acres -about 30 miles west of Mil-ford. A tremendous surge of oil and gas lease applications in western Utah were filed with the Bureau of Land M anagement this past week, continuing the high interest in leasing activity near the Utah -Nevada state line, according ac-cording to Carlton Stowe, minerals specialist with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Geological & Mineral Survey. This is the third week that leasing has been active in the area.' The lease play added over 834,380 acres during the week, primarily concentrated concentrat-ed in the area west of Mil-ford Mil-ford and reaching as far north -northwest past the Go -shute Indian Reservation in the vicinity of Ibapah in Southwestern Tooele County. Largest of the recent filings were by R. C. Hoefle of Billings. His applications cover 210,100 acres southwest south-west of Sevier Lake spreading spread-ing through the Wan Wah Mountains and vicinity about 15 miles west of Milford and throughout 7 townships south of Garrison along the Utah-Nevada Utah-Nevada state line. Some 58,-000 58,-000 acres were filed by Trend Resources Ltd., Denver, Den-ver, in the Ibapah area north of the Goshute Indian Reservation Res-ervation and north of Garrison Gar-rison along the state line. Earl Cranston, Billings, filed on 124,375 acres southeast of the Indian Reservation in the Trout Creek area. Others active in the oil and gas lease play, notes Mr. Stowe, Include Dave Reed, Dallas, who filed on 58,250 acres in the White Valley region between be-tween the Confusion and House Ranges about 40 miles west of Delta; Esdras Hartley, Hart-ley, Denver; Wilfred Gray, Denver; D. R. Gaither, Salt Lake City; Emerald Oil, Salt Lake City; Robert Healy, Salt Lake City; and William Stevenson, Stev-enson, Salt Lake City. William Johnson, Engle-wood, Engle-wood, Colorado, filed lease applications covering more than 173,000 acres in Kane County.
