The Cowboys fumbled on the 47 and Milford recovered re-covered only to give the ball back on the next play with Kanab gaining a yard, and so it went until the Cowboys dropped back to punt and Barney Thompson got in the way. The blocked punt was picked up on the 40 yard line by Curt Yardley and with a key block from Roger Barnes, scampered the 40 yards for Milford's only TX. The P.A.T. failed with 4:28 left in the third quarter and the Cowboys led 7-6. Kanab returned the kick-off kick-off 51 yards to the 41. They dribbled the ball for another six yards and then the quarterback quar-terback Kevin Bunting on a room and cut up the sideline. He crossed the Midstripe and cut inside before being hauled haul-ed down on the Cowboy 40. On the next play Jones had his defender beat and Nelson unloaded a bomb that was right on target, but the safety safe-ty managed to get a finger on it and it fell incomplete, and the drive faltered. The Cowboys took over on downs on their own 47 and ran out the clock. Smith was injured on the play and with Ogden already on his way to the hospital it looked as if the Cowboys would score again. The next play, a pass over the goal line was intercepted by Randy Hiatt and the Tigers Tig-ers had the ball on their own 20 yard line, with two minutes min-utes left in the ball game. On second down, Mayer took a handoff from Nelson, dropped back and fired a bullet down the middle to Roger Barnes on the Milford 40. The Tigers settled down to tough defense and the Cowboys Cow-boys couldnt move the ball effectively. They forced Cowboy mistakes, but were unable to really move the ball until the second quarter when the Cowboys punted out-of-bounds on the Milford 32 yard line. Gary Mayer twisted twist-ed and turned for a first down on the 43 and Wayne Lounsbury ran around his own end to lay it on the 40. He picked up four more and Mayer carried to the Kanab 45 before the Cowboy defense took hold. On 4th down the Tigers faked a punt and hiked hik-ed the ball to Lounsbury who scrambled for a first down to gije the Tigers new life on the Kanab 42. Mayer moved it to the 32 for another 1st down. But then the offense boggled down again. Nelson was dropped for no gain, a pass to Ken Jones got one and Mayer picked up three. It was fourth down and Smith dropped back to the 50 to punt. Another fake! Smith took the pass from center and fired a bullet to Mayer on the 18 yard line. Mayer scrambled to the 11 where he was pulled down. He carried for six more to the five, and on 3rd down to the 1 12 yard line. It looked as if the Tigers would score. But Nelson couldn't find the handle and Kanab recovered recov-ered to stop the drive. In four downs the Cowboys were unable to move and the punt gave the Tigers the ball just 24 yards from the goal. The Tigers moved to the 15 before turning it over to Kanab. Ka-nab. After the Cowboys punted to Lounsbury on the forty, the Tigers started their drive again moving to the 21 yardllne before the clock ran out the half. Kanab took the kickoff and returned to the 50, but were. HERE'S MORE ABOUT TIGERS and gained 40 yards on a pass from Mayer. Mayer rushed for 55 yards and passed for 40 yards. Nelson completed 7 for 11 and Smith hit Mayer for 17 yards. Lounsbury rushed for 40 yards and returned 49 yards. Jones had 26 yards, all on pass receptions. Nelson and Thompson both rushed for 2 yards. Milford had 99 yards rushing rush-ing and 110 passing, for a total offense of 209 yards. Friday the Rams travel . to Milford, rated one of the top teams in the league despite des-pite losses to Beaver and Kanab. The Rams lost to Beaver 19-0 last week and Kanab 7-0, but Beaver had only a nine yard edge in total to-tal offense. There are no real powers in the league this year, and any team, including Pan-guitch Pan-guitch can be a spoiler on a given night. The Tigers looked good Friday, but couldn't convert long drives into scores. Something you can count on the coaches working on this week. Smith and Ogden will probably both be ready by Friday. Ogden has bruised ribs and Smith collided with Johnson and was out cold for a while. The Parowan game starts at 8:00 p.m. in Milford Friday. |
