Show NOTES FROM THE FISH and GAME DEPARTMENT ARCHERY HUNT STARTS SATURDAY Utah's second big game hunting season will open Aug. 24, with over 12,000 archers primed for an outing in pursuit pur-suit of Utah's most popular big game animal, the mule deer. Set to run through Sept. 8. this year's hunt includes the Labor Day week end for archers arch-ers in pursuit of animals of either sex on a statewide basis except for the Oak City unit, which is closed to all deer hunting this year. Hunters who buy an archery tag are not eligible to possess a deer control permit, however, hunters may fill both their archery and regular license tags during the archery season sea-son as long as both are filled with the bow and arrow. There are no clothing requirements re-quirements for the bow hunt. Other regulations such as carrying car-rying the bow permit at all times while hunting and the tagging regulation remain the same as past archery hunts. In 1967, 12,108 hunters harvested har-vested 2,067 deer for a 17 hunter success. MOUNTAIN QUAIL INTRODUCED TO UTAH A new species of quail was introduced into the State of Utah last week. The birds, mountain quail, were trapped by the California Department of Fish and Game and shipped air express to Salt Lake. They were released re-leased in Davis County and on the LaSal Mountains near Moab. This initial release included adult and juvenile birds. It is hoped the birds will be able to adapt to their new environment environ-ment and establish breeding populations. Mountain quail are reported to be an exceptionally sporty bird, difficult to hunt because of the terrain they inhabit, and are also reported to be rated among the top in table quality. These birds should not compete com-pete with other game birds such as chukar partridge or forest grouse. They are adapted adapt-ed to vacant habitat niches and should provide another species for the upland game 'bird hunter hunt-er to pursue during the fall months. This mountain quail is the largest of the species of quail. It is larger than both the California Cali-fornia quail and the Gambels quail. Adult mountain quail vill weigh nearly V2 pound. |
