Show TIGERS LOSE TO BEAVER: NEAR RIOT ERUPTS WHEN FINAL BASKET RULED OUT; MILFORD PROTEST OVERRULED Mil.'ord dropped a hotly-dispiued ballgame, 54-52, at Beaver last weelc end, and the following day a protest instituted by Milford Principal Jesse Long was disallowed disal-lowed at a spec'al meeting xf the Region Eoard of Governors, Gov-ernors, held in Cedar City. A real rict erupted after the final buzzer when a two-and-one call by the referee was overruled by the timer and Milford fans, feeling they had been robbed of a tie and possible victory, poured onto the floor to be met by Beaver fans who were equally certain that the timer's call was correct. With 4 seconds to go in the overtime period the Tigers, trailing by 2 points, had the ball out of bounds. Coach Don Rowley called time out and set up a scoring play. The ball was passed in to Roberts who dribbled once and passed to Fowles. Fowles took one step and hooked the ball into the basket. The referee ref-eree called a two-and-one shot, signaling that Fowles basket was good and he had been fouled in shooting. The timer ruled that time had run out before Fowles got the ball away. Milford fans contend the ball was completely thru the hoop before the buzzer sounded. Then came the riot. One Milford lady was slugged in the arm, and a Milford girl was vigorously slapped. The Beaver law officers had a rough time restoring order. At the region hearing on Principal Long's protest, which was based on a region regulation regu-lation that in the event the timers (plural) disagree on validity of a basket, the basket shall be counted. The region officials ruled that since the ' leferee had named an official timer, his ruling must prevail even though the other timer (termed a "watcher" by the official) of-ficial) disagreed. The game was hard fought and cleanly played. Sportsmanship Sports-manship was "the best," and both teams were after the victory vic-tory each second of the game. Fowles officially shelled the hoop for 30 points, to increase his lead in the Region 10 average aver-age scoring department. Friday Miliord has a bye, and Beaver meets Millard at Fillmore. If Fillmore wins, as is expected, Milford and Beaver Bea-ver will be tied for second place and both teams go into the region round-robin to select se-lect the third state tourney team from Region 10. The Region Board of Managers Man-agers meet today (Thursday) to name the site of the round robin, with Fillmore and Cedar City, both with new, adequate gyms, having the best chance to get the nod. The round robin will be played next Friday Fri-day and Saturday, Feb. 28-29.
