Show Milford 'Junior Scientists' Build and Fire Rockets America's future scientists start young in Milford. A group of 10 youths, ranging rang-ing in age from 12 to 15 years, have organized under tne ostentatious os-tentatious title of "Milford Aeronautics and Space Administration," Admin-istration," which really means they have formed a junior rocket club, and after five weeks of studying rockets and rocketry, have learned to design, de-sign, build, and "blast off" their own rockets. The youngsers have successfully suc-cessfully fired more than 50 rockets, including several multi-stage zoomers. The club was formed after Jesse Long, Milford High School instructor, told of a demonstration he witnessed presented by a young rocket club at a convention. Young Mike Symond, son of Dr. and Mrs. D. A. Symond, obtained - - , rocket materials, had a successful suc-cessful firing, and with a group of friends organized the Milford Rocketeers. The club meets twice weekly, week-ly, on Fridays to discuss and study rockets and rocket firing, fir-ing, plan new designs, and con duct "club" business. On Saturdays Sat-urdays they launch rockets. Each neophyte must design draw plans for, build and successfully suc-cessfully fire a rocket before he can consider himself a full-iledged full-iledged member. The club has strict rules regarding safety and governing conduct of the membors. Dr. Symond is adull sponsor and supervisor, and stresses adequate precautions at all times, and checks the boyr out periodically on safety practices. Officers are Mike Symond, president; Jan Memmott, vice president; Boyd Schow, secretary-treasurer; and Steve Williams Wil-liams Jr., publicity. Dues are 75c weekly and money collected collect-ed is used to purchase rocket materials nad instructional ma terial. Materials are obtained from a Colorado distributor, and engines en-gines are absolutely safe ami offer no danger to operators. The group has built and launched several multi-stage rockets; they have experimented experiment-ed with parachute and streamer-recovery types of rockets tested slow-launch and taped-to-pad rockets which cannot b Jr., Mike Schow, Earl Griffith. Highest of their recorded re-corded launchings has been, 1800 feet (according to the altiscopes the youngsters use) but they have rockets capable of attaining heights of more than 3000 feet. Some members have used excess power multiple mul-tiple engines to attain great speed and altitude, but this practice is discouraged by the .group.
