Show Board of Education Says County Schools Toi Open on Schedule Beaver County Schools will open on Sept. 3, and "we expect ex-pect them to be fully staffed with qualified teachers," according ac-cording to Bryce Draper, Beaver Bea-ver County Superintendent. That was the report Mr. Draper made following the regular meeting of the Board of Education Wednesday. The Board received a letter from Wallace Dean, president of the county teachers' association, associ-ation, listing teachers who have forwarded their contracts to him, and all have declared an intention to teach next year in Beaver County "when the present impasse regarding support sup-port of schools is resolved." Six teachers of the district have resigned, Mr. Draper said, and he has been authorized author-ized to employ replacements for these teachers. They include in-clude two music teachers, a speech teacher at Beaver, girls' PE teacher at Milford, Reese Thomas, Milford instructor who has accepted a scholarship scholar-ship at a Northwest university, and a counselor at Beaver. Mr. Draper advised The Beaver Bea-ver County News that he had been misquoted in a state daily newspaper story stating that Monday was a deadline for return re-turn of signed contracts, and although letters of intent have been offered Beaver teachers, "we sent out contracts and what we expect back is contracts, con-tracts, signed ... I intend to start immediately seeking teachers for the 61 positions in the district." "I was misquoted," Mr. Draper said. "Such action would be a matter for the Board of Education to decide ... a matter of policy. I am the county superintendent, and I only carry out policies set by the Board, and their instructions instruc-tions to me." In other action at Wednesday's Wednes-day's meeting the Board agreed to accept responsibility for teaching classes tc train 80 women who will be employed at a new clothing factory to be started in Beaver. The classes will be conducted under un-der an agreement with the federal fed-eral government, and the local board will be reimbursed for salaries of the teachers. An additional half-day of library supervision has been added in the three elementary schools of the county, and custodians cus-todians have been granted a 7 increase in salary. Another matter clarified was announcement that students who will have reached age 15y2 by August 31 may now take "behind the wheel" driver driv-er training in Milford. |
