Powers has announce . In asking the cooperation and assistance of nearly three million Legionnaires to make this year's drive a success, National Commander Powers declared, "This is an unusual opportunity to demonstrate our belief in America; to show how Americans work together in the cause of freedom." The goal of the 1963 Freedom Free-dom Bond Drive is the purchase pur-chase of at least one United States Savings Bond by each family in the nation by the Fourth of July, the closing date of the campaign. Commander Powers has asked not only the participa- tion of Legionnaires in the j purchase of Savings Bonds, but i also the supoprt of the more than 16.000 American Legion Posts in the campaigns which will be conducted In their respective re-spective communities. "In 1941, when the Treasury Department decided to introduce intro-duce the sale of small-denomination bonds, The American Legion was one of the first large organizations approached to help this valuable program to success," Commander Powers Pow-ers explained. "The American Legion is justifiably proud of Its role in the history of this program. Our participation is another demonstration of our declared purpose, 'to inculcate a sense of individual obligation obliga-tion to the community, state and nation'." The theme of the 1963 drive, "Strong Families Keep America Amer-ica Strong," emphasizes the Importance of the family unit, and its general well-being, to the preservation of the American Amer-ican way of life. "American Legion participation participa-tion in this year's campaign,'' Commander Powers said, "can do so much to strengthen our country, and will be a valuable valu-able service to both the Individual Indi-vidual citizen and the community. com-munity. I sincerely hope every American Legion family will become a bond-owning family." |
