Show Owen R. Smith Feted At Retirement Party Owen R. Smith was honored at a railroad retirement banquet ban-quet and dance by the O. W. Karn Lodge No. 439, March 16, in the IOOF Hall. Attending from out of town were his children, Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, Cedar City; Albert Smith, Brigham City; sisters and brothers in law, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Morgan, Pleasant Grove; Mrs. Rubie Steele, Go' shen; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stephenson, Cedar City, and others. Mr. Smith made his first run on the railroad July 30, 1920, with Otto Steenbock, to Cali-ente. Cali-ente. He was promoted to engineer en-gineer March 16, 1937. He made his final run May 30, 1961. and he was officially released Dec. 13, 1961. Thurland D. Sly, president of O. W. Karn Lodge, introduced intro-duced Mr. Smith and visitors, and Eugene Johnson acted as master of ceremonies. Many fellow railroad employes made talks, recalling their associations associa-tions with Mr. Smith throughout through-out the years. Local Chairman Doug Bolton presented Mr. Smith with a beautifully engraved watch; his children presented him with a camera.and he received a patio cushion and blanket from his sisters. Mrs. Smith, was presented a gift by Phyllis Phyl-lis Erickson on behalf of the auxiliary lodge No. 358. A smorgasbord was served to the 90 persons present "by the dinner committee, Winnie Johnson, Phyllis Erickson, Mina Leppink, Wilma Weston, Alma Sly, Merlin Merryweath-er, Merryweath-er, Dave Erickson, Thurland Sly, Leo Harton, Gale Banks and John Beitz. Dancing was enjoyed to music by Jake Schow's orchestra. |
