Show APPLE TREE WIRED MOTHERS PICKET OWNER ''Don't Sit Under My Apple Tree," the World War II song that became a favorite, isn't a favorite with a trio of Milford mothers. Tuesday they formed a picket line in front of a Milford business establishment, objecting to the proprietor "wiring" an apple tree in his back yard to Keep the children away. "I don't mind 'em sitting under un-der the tree," said R. H. ("Babe") Ruth, proprietor of the B & J Club, "but I don't like the children climbing in the tree, breaking off branches, and littering the ground under it with green apples and broken brok-en branches." The picketing mothers, Mrs. Roland Culver, Mrs. Rolan Larsen, and Mrs. Rosemary Davie, contend that while older old-er children may have been damaging Mr. Ruth's trees and shrubs, the electrical wiring of the tree constitutes a serious hazard to small children who may wander into it. The mothers of young children chil-dren living near the Ruth home on West 600 South, said they would "keep picketing until he takes the wires down." "All we are afraid of is our children are going to be electrocuted," elec-trocuted," one mother said. "They have to water the tree every other day to keep it alive, and everyone knows water intensifies electricity." "The older ones we aren't so worried about," another mother said. "But the young ones just don't know. How can you tell a 3 or 4 year old child about electricity? If we can save a life it will be worth it." After urging Mr. Ruth to remove re-move the electric attachment, the ladies appealed to the Milford Mil-ford City Council, and at Monday Mon-day evening's meeting the Councilmen instructed the City Attorney to draft a letter to Mr. Ruth pointing out the danger dan-ger of the electrical hook-up and stating that the City Council Coun-cil considered it a "hazardous nuisance" under the city ordinances, ordi-nances, and that it should be removed. The ladies said they called Mr. Ruth Tuesday morning and "gave him an hour to get the electric wires removed," then they started picketing his business bus-iness establishment. Mr. Ruth, a frequent prac- . tical joker, has a "shocker" running the length of the bar in the club a piece of metal moulding wired to an electric circuit which, on making a contact administers a mild shock to any patrons whose arms are touching the moulding. mould-ing. "The wires I have running around the apple tree look formidable," Mr. Ruth said, but actually the transformer only puts out about one-tenth the juice that goes into the moulding on my bar, and would hardly do more than make a fly jump. I did it more for a gag than anything else." The Picketing Mothers carried car-ried their placards an hour Tuesday morning, and again Tuesday evening. The News has been advised that after receiving the letter from the City Council, Mr. Ruth disconnected the electricity elec-tricity from the wiring. |
