Show 'NEW TENSION LAW STRESSES BENEFITS FOR WIDOW, ORPHAN (Editor's Note This Is the fourth part of a series of questions ques-tions and answers on the new pension pen-sion law for veterans and their survivors.) Under the new law, pensions of veterans who require regular aid and attendance will be increased, but the pension will be reduced when he is hospitalized by VA. Q. How will veterans requiring aid and attendance be affected? A. Under the new law, their pension will be increased by $70 a month. Q. Will these veterans' pensions pen-sions also be reduced to $30 a month if hospitalized or domiciled by VA? A. Yes, unless they are receiving receiv-ing care or treatment for leprosy. Q. How will the new law increase in-crease eligibility for widows and children? A. VA estimates that approximately approxi-mately 200,000 widows and children, chil-dren, survivors of World War II or the Korean conflict veterans, will become eligible for pensions after July 1, 1960, under the new law. Q. Don't they receive pensions under the present law. A. Only if they can show that the veteran had a service-connected disability when he died. Q. Do widows and children of deceased World War I veterans have to prove the veteran had a service-connected disability to be eligible? A. No, they do not. And, after next July 1, survivors of World War II and Korean conflict veterans vet-erans like survivors of World War I veterans will have to show only that the veteran had 90 days of wartime service (or a discharge for disability), was not. dishonorably dishonor-ably discharged, and their annual income is within the limits prescribed pre-scribed by law to indicate the need for a pension. Q. How much pension does a widow receive now? A. A widow with no children gets $50.40 a month; with one minor min-or child, $63 a month; and $7.56 a month for each additional minor child. Q. What is the present limit on annual income for widows? A. A childless widow may be eligible if her annual income does not exceed $1400; with children, her income ceiling is $2700 a year. - tt... Under the new law, a childless child-less widow will receive $60 a month if her income is not more than $600 a year; $45 a month if income is from $600 to $1200; and $25 a month if income is from $1200 to $1800. She is not eligible for pension if her annual icome exceeds ex-ceeds $1800. Q. How will the new law affect a widow with chidren? A. Under the new law, a widow with one child will receive $75 a month if her annual income is more than $1000; $60 a month if her annual income is from $1000 to $2000; and $40 a month if income in-come is from $2000 to $3000. She will receive an extra $15 a month for each additional minor child, but is not eligible for pension if her annual income exceeds $3000.
