Show Bennett Asks INlore Liberal' Drought Aid U. S. Sen. Wallace F. Bennett said Wednesday that the Department Depart-ment of Atjrionl'nre has liberal ized its interpretation of regulator regula-tor for assistance to the five drought - stricken counties of southern Utah. Senator Bennett and Utah officials of-ficials had protested that the regulations were being enforced in such a restrictive manner as to require a stock man to say he was "going broke" before he would be eligible for any aid. "In the future," Senator Bennett Ben-nett said, "ranchers may qualify for assistance without being forced to impair their future credit ratines, rat-ines, provided that a real need exists." President Eisenhower declared the five counties Beaver, Iron, Kane, Carbon and Emery as drought disaster areas October 23. The designation entitles ranchers to obtain surplus feed grains ex ccpt wheat at the reduced rates of $1 off per hundred pounds. They also can qualify for emer gency livestock loans. "During the first two weeks of the program, it appears that regulations regu-lations were misunderstood in some cases, and too rigicy interpreted in-terpreted in others," Senator Bennett Ben-nett said. He explained that al though they will be liberalized, however, is still will be necessary to demonstrate need. For exam-' exam-' pie, a rancher with a large net worth will usually not be permitted permit-ted to participate in the program unless special circumstances are demonstrated. |
