Spurred by a flood of letters from "back home" which demand de-mand that' the proposed 1 958 federal budget of $71,800,000,000 be cut, a lot of people in Washington are talking about it, but profess they don't know how it can be done. The National Association of Manufacturers has just issued an analysis showing how cuts aggregating $8,227,000,000 can be made without weakening military security or impairing any essential civilian programs. ... The biggest overall reduction recommended by the NAM is in domestic spending a total cut of $4,077,000,000. This would be accomplished by the elimination of certain programs and the curtailment of scope and cost, limitations and reductions in others. Now that it has been shown how the record-breaking peace-time budget can be cut, will there be some action in Washington? |
