Show ATHLETIC REVIEW FOOTBALL--When coach Swenson came to Weber last fall, he asked to see the football equipment. He was shown one jersey, one pair of pants, and one shoe. (When he asked where the other shoe was, he was told not to be so extrav-agent, that there is only one punter on a football team and that he only punts with one foot.) At the first call for football the candidates who turned out were almost as poor and as few as the football equipment. With the big game of tho year only two weeks off, coach Swenson had more than a job, but with the help of coach Bel-liston he managed to put a team on the field against McKinley of Honolulu. When the lights of the stadium were turned out that night our twenty-four visitors from the fan island had decisively won, 24 to 0. The game with the U. I. S. B. at Pocatello was also played without the aid of Sol or any other lighting system. The score was 19 to 6 in Idaho's favor. Albion Normal was Weber's next opponent. After pushing each other around for several hours they decided to call the game off. Score 0 to 0. The first time the Wildcats saw the sunlight they saw too much of the B. A. C, losing 13-0. With but two games left to play on the schedule and no victories yet recorded the We-berites were determined to defeat the champion Ricks college eleven. After pushing one of Weber's much prized (by some) buses to Rexburg, the team was quite conditioned for a battle. The day was perfect for a blizzard, and a blizzard there was, with mud and snow knee deep on the field. They out-played Ricks throughout, but Lady Luck withstood the bitter cold and helped Ricks gain a scoreless tie. In the last game Weber displayed the best football of the year to defeat Westminster, 21-0. At the end of the season Weber and Ricks were tied for the championship, but it was officially awarded to Ricks. The reason was that Ricks defeated Albion, while Weber only gained a tie against them. The outstanding players for Weber during the year were: Captains Harm Williams and Leon Green, Blaine Thatcher, Vern Springer, John Thompson, Darrell Hall, and Bob Van Dyke, all of whom were named on the first or second all-conference selections. The prospects for next year's team are very bright, and a difficult schedule has been outlined:Oct. 6 Weber vs. B. Y. U. frosh at Provo " 13 " " U. I. S. B. at Ogden " 20 " " U. of U. frosh at Salt Lake " 27 " " U. A. C frosh at Ogden Nov. 3 " " Branch Aggies at Cedar City " 10 " " Snow at Ephriam " 17 " " Westminster at Ogden It will be noticed that Ricks and Albion, traditional opponents, have been replaced by the state freshman teams. BASKETBALL--The Weber 1933-34 basketball edition was composed of entirely green material. Coach Swenson again had to make a team from inexperienced material, but tiward the end of the season they were winning their share of ball games. . - In the .re-season games Weber lost to the U. of U. reserves, the U. A. C. reserves, and divided two games with the B. Y. U. In league competition Weber lost two games to Ricks, two games to Westminister by two points each, and defeated Albion twice. The players who stood out during the season were Leon Green, Cluff Snow, Roy Doxey, and Lynn Wi 1 cox . TRACK--In the track season just closed-Weber had one of the best track and field teams in history. Coach Carl Bel 1 i ston started early and worked long and hard to develop the squad. He turned out a very well balanced team and several exceptional individual performers. Steve Rushforth broke the record in the 440-yard run at Provo while Ray Zenger broke the javelin and shot put marks. Other outstanding trackmen were: Don Kincaid, Burnell Nelson,. Vern Williams, and Russell Alley. Weber placed second in the conference track meet, running Albion. close for first place. o TENNIS--Ralph Clark won the Weber tennis tournament by defeating Frank Tolhurst in the tin-als, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7, 10-8, 6-2. Ralph also won the junior college championship. Stan Benson-Jim Sundquist, IJC doubles champions ol 1933 lost the laurals to Peterson-Wolfrom of Westminster. The prospects ior tennis are good next year, with Paul Harames, Frank Tolhurst, and others returning. o CHESS FINALS: Lowel James will meet the winner o the semi-final match between Lynn Roberts and Lowel Anderson for the chess championship of Weber college.
