WSU will take on Idaho State University on Saturday in the homecoming game. By Corie Holmes asst. spots editor I The Signpost After a week off of game situations, Weber State University's football team will play this Saturday against conference rival Idaho State University in the homecoming game. "We had the bye week and had a chance to rest up and to get our legs back under us and get after it in practice," said Kamaal Ahmad, WSU assistant football coach. "We've been working as hard as we can work, making sure we do everything that we need to do." WSU sits at 2-1 in the Big Sky Conference after beating Sacramento State University and Northern Colorado University and falling to Eastern Washington University. WSU will now play four of the next five games at home, having already played the first four out of five games on the road. WSU is 22-27 in homecoming games. Before the game, a pre-game carnival and tailgate party will be held in the parking lot north of the stadium. There will also be post-game fireworks. WSU has played ISU eight times for homecoming games. WSU has won six of the last eight, and this will be WSU's first time facing ISU in a Homecoming is more of a reason for us to maintain our destiny... homecoming game since 1986. "Homecoming is more of a reason for us to maintain our destiny," said sophomore Robbie Diamond. "It's our home field, and we don't want another university to come in and take our glory, so we play twice as hard." This weekend is Head Coach Ron McBride's 72nd birthday. This makes him the sixth-oldest head football coach in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. WSU Assistant Coach John Zamberlin served as ISU's head coach for the last three seasons. He coached the ISU Bengals from 2007- 10. He is currently the defensive tackle coach for the WSU Wildcats. "They're a good team," Ahmad said. "Coach Zamberlin, he's with us now, but he recruited a lot of those guys, and they've brought in a few guys who are real good, and they do a good job." Saturday's game will be the 51st meeting between WSU and ISU. WSU holds 36-14 over ISU. The Wildcats have won eight straight and 14 out of the last 15 games against ISU. WSU leads 18-5 all-time and has won 12 straight at home in Ogden. ISU last beat WSU at Stewart Stadium in 1984. It was recently announced that the first two weeks of the season have been canceled due to the ongoing lockout. While many NBA fans are frustrated with the NBA situation, college basketball fans are gearing up for the start of another exciting season. This is true in Ogden, where the Weber State University men's basketball team is preparing to open its season in a few short weeks. Hopes are high for WSU this season, and with a strong core of returning players, the team should have lots of success in the Big Sky. Recently, Head Coach Randy Rahe said the time before the season starts is always an exciting time for the team. "This is always an exciting time of year for us, and we are anxious and looking forward to getting started," Rahe said. "We have a great group of kids here, and everyone is ready to get the season going." Last year, WSU had a strong season, much of which was played without star point guard Damian Lillard, who was out with an injury. With Lillard back, I'm predicting that the team will win the conference and the Big Sky tournament. Last season, Lillard played in nine games for the WSU Wildcats. The tournament was held on Monday and continued on to Tuesday. The Wildcats were ready to compete at their home course at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton on Monday. WSU shot a final round of 305 and a total score of 906 to wrap up the tournament and take the ninth stop. It was a rough start for the WSU Wildcats, with the team shooting a total of 307 in the first round to start the tournament. They improved to a team total of 294 in the second round, with junior Matt Wahlen shooting the low score of the day for WSU. Wahlen shot a three-un- der-par 69 in the second round to boost the Wildcats going into the third round, which continued on Tuesday. In the third round, WSU shot a team total of 305 and finished with an overall team total of 906. Wahlen said the team members were disappointed they didn't have a better performance in their only home tournament of the year. "This wasn't our best tournament," Wahlen said. "We wanted to win our home tournament." Sacramento State University won the tournament with a total team score of 818. SSU's top player, Cameron Rap- pleye, shot a 68 and a 69 in the first and second round and a 75 in the third. Rap- peleye's overall score was a 212, which helped lead his team to that first-place victory. The Wildcats took ninth place at their only home tournament. Wahlen led the team to its ninth-place finish, both shooting a 77 in the first round. Johnson, who is a freshman, shot a 73 and a 77 for his second and third round, with an overall score of 227. Wahlen shot a 69 in the second and an 82 in the third. This brought him to a total of 228 and landed him in the 40th overall spot for top players. Wahlen said that his main focus is trying to shoot a good score that will help the team. "Our goal is really just to go out there and compete and give ourselves an opportunity to contend at these tournaments," Wahlen said. Alex Sutton, the only senior on the See Golf page 7 |
