Show V THE SIGNPOST EDITORIAL Friday, September 4,2009 Signpost Viewpoint Football fans gearing up YOU WERE MIT A CAK?J THANK GOODNESS IT WASN'T ANOTHER DEBATE ABOUT i THE GOVERNMeNT^ HEALTH CARE Expectations are high for season opener ' After eight long months of waiting, football season is finally here. Not only is the drama with whether or not Brett Favre"will retire finally over (although don't count out the possibility of him retiring and unretiring next year), but the Wildcats are about to kick off a new season. Tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 5, the Weber State University Wildcats open up their season against the University of Wyoming Cowboys. And could the expectations for the year be any higher? Junior quarterback Cameron Higgens is on the Payton Award watch list along with senior running back Trevyn Smith. Smith is also on the brink of Big Sky Conference history. He has led the league in rushing for the past three years, and, with one more rushing title, will become the first player to ever lead the conference four years in a row. Then there's senior Josh Morris. His play at cornerback, especially in the playoffs last season, has him on the Defensive flayer of the Year watch list. These three players, along with seniors wide receiver Tim Toone, center Kyle Mutcher, tight end Cody Nakamura and safety Beau Hadley were named to t.he Consensus Draft Services Football College Subdivision PreSeason All-American Team. •: The 'Cats were also picked to finish second in the Big Sky Conference, behind University of Montana and seventh in the FCS. '; With all this firepower this season is sure to be exciting but, until the season is underway, it's impossible to say how exciting the next four months will be and how successful the team will be. Here are a few questions that the Wildcats will be able to answer in the first few weeks. :• Don Eck has taken over the duties of Offensive Coordinator this year. The question is how will this affect the offense? Their offense was explosive last year, scoring 62 against Montana Western in their season opener last year, 59 against Idaho State University, and at least 40 points in four more of their games. How much change do they really need to make? :' Another question relates to the rest of the new coaching staff. Jason Beck, who played backup quarterback at Brigham Young University and worked with the Louisiana State University quarterbacks, will be working with Higgens. Inoke Breckterfield, w.ho was an All-American at Oregon State University, is the new defensive line coach and former NFLpIayer Andre Dyson is forking with the cornerbacks. Although you have to trust Head Cpach Ron McBride, it is a significant overhaul of last year's coaching roster, and it will be interesting to see what the new Staff brings to the table and how it affects the team's success. •; Finally, it remains to be seen if, whether it be returning players or new recruits, players step up and manage to vault the 'fiats over rival University of Montana and the rest of the Big Sky Conference into contention for a National FCS Championship. !:; Comment on this column at wsusignpost.com. If you don't believe me, ask someone you don't know, or get a new roommate. Food and eating habits inspire emotion in people that are akin to political or religious conversation. How many times have you prayed that the cooks at Denny's didn't spit in your food because someone at your table was rude? After watching the movie Waiting, your fears might have increased. I know mine did. Although I noticed at lunch today that these fears didn't stop me from making a trip to the BK Lounge in order to grab lunch. Quick and easy, Burger King provided a place to grab food on the run - and a new topic for this week's top five. So ladies and gentleman, here are the top five worst things to find in your fast food. If have a weak stomach, be forewarned. 5. Hair. No one wants hair in their food. Somehow it's OK if the wind blows your own hair in your mouth. Sometimes it's OK to get your significant other's hair in your mouth during a kiss. However, it isn't OK to get someone else's hair in your entree. I can provide my own dentalfloss- thank you. 4. The Wendy's Chili Finger. To be honest, I think finding any finger in one's entree is unacceptable. People SOURCE:hlipi//tjmpiyfridge.l"iles.\votdprctt.caiT tend to think that the only fingers that belong in or on their food are their own. No one likes to have their meal touched needlessly by cooks or servers. This increases the chances of hair and other foul things nesting in our food. The Wendy's chili finger reminds me that cannibalism is frowned upon in most societies. Thank you Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the good advice. 3. Toenails. How would you know the difference between a toenail and a fingernail? Although I don't have an answer, why a cook would have his toes in the vicinity of food preparation remains a mystery. Correct me if I am wrong, but nails (human or otherwise) don't belong in food-period. 2. The Tumor in the Chicken. Uncle Bob grabs a piece of chicken. It's finger lickin' good right up until he bites into a tumor. The urban legend never provides eyewitnesses at the scene, but the implications of the story remain the same. Do you want a tumor in your chicken? Think about it. OK, maybe you shouldn't think too hard. 1. A rat (or any other crawling, scurrying creature). Jordan Bailey, Sports Director at KWCR 88.1 Weber FM, spun a yarn about finding a rat in a container of milk. What a blood (or milk) curdling thought! Is this story an urban legend as well? It doesn't matter. Diseased and disgusting, crawling creatures top the list of things that people don't want in their food. Why else would the guys from Strange Brew put a mouse in a bottle ?boin order to score free beer? Comment on this column at wsusignpost.com.
