Ahlf went on to become a civil and structural engineer who helped build dams all over the world, including Thailand and Taiwan. Ahlf plans on leaving the remainder of his estate to WSU in a scholarship program upon his death because of the impact that the school has had on his life. Three WSU alumni were honored with the 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is designed to honor WSU alumni for their exceptional achievements and service. The recipients of the award were Tom L. Allen, Mary C. Hall and Robert P. Dotson. When Tom Allen, who graduated from WSU in 1971, began his education at WSU he intended to become an engineer, but he changed his major to accounting and eventually became the Utah state auditor. Allen then went on to serve as the chairman of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, which is the highest professional ranking an accountant can hold. "It's the journey; it's the challenge that's fun," Allen said. Mary Hall graduated from WSU in 1985 with a botany major. She originally planned on majoring in business, but changed her mind after taking a general education environmental science class. She said the class profoundly influenced her way of thinking about the environment. Hall went on to serve as the Ogden Nature Center director, where she helped improve the education program. Hall also served a term on the Ogden City Council and continues to improve her community in any way she can.
