Show It's been a good year for sports , amie Peterson asst. sports editor It used to be that I didn't really pay attention to any other sport besides women's basketball. Sure, I wanted the other teams to do well, but I really couldn't say who was playing who this weekend, where they were playing or even how they did afterward. Writing for The Signpost, though, has changed all of that. I went from being a Weber State University sports know-nothing to a sports know-it-all ... and it was fun. Being forced to become involved in other sports besides my own has been one of my favorite ventures as a WSU student. It gave me a sense of school spirit and a sense of pride. Suddenly I cared that the football team went 3-8 on the season, or that the men's basketball team dropped its first-two conference games at home. All in all, I have to say that the WSU athletic department had a pretty successful year. Sure the football team could have done a little better and the men's basketball team had a disappointing season, but look at all the other sports teams that represented our school so well. First off, let's not overlook, as we so often do, the track teams. Those athletes are unieul. Both the men'?, and the women's cross count!-' teams took second in die Big Sky this year and then rebounded to win the conference during the indoor season. Both teams are well on their ways to winning the outdoor season as well. Women's soccer also pulled off a great season. For the second time in four years, the team won the Big Sky title and hosted the conference tournament. Even though the 'Cats fell short of heading to the NCAAs by losing to Idaho State University, 0-1, in the final game of the tournament, their perfect 6-0 conference showing can not go unmentioned. And what about women's basketball? I admit I' m a little biased, but the team does deserve a little credit. Finishing with a best-ever 22-9 record ain't to shabby. Plus, winning the conference, hosting the Big Sky Tournament and going to the NCAAs for the first time in school history is quite the feat. Then there is men's golf, which recently won the Big Sky for the second year in-a-row. After getting off to a below-par start, and taking quite a hit from WSU media, those guys came back and rocked Big Sky competition last week in St. George. We have to still give a hand to all the other sports teams who work their butts off day in and day out to represent our school. We did not have one team this year that really just sucked. niii f-- -'r?iftiwrhiri-iiiii ii iirriirMiritwl,i;MrS--i;-'J'--Jrt---,"''-Ll-'" Ask your local paper how you can reach over 500,000 households in 50 Utah newspapers m one easy siepj through Utah Press Association statewide classified advertising network, j (National placement also available through Utah Press.) 3a s s i i O C A T 1 O N A New Indispensable Internet Tool For Your Business! if " ' I H Ul.i!i U'sya V in f Un.ilM.v it, (i':i',;!c!
