Show The Signpost By Jose Carvajal managing editor The Signpost My tenure at Tlie Signpost has come to an end. It's been a fun three years and I'll take some great memories with me. This year particularly has been interesting. While I've learned a lot about myself, I've also learned a lot about my co-workers. Here's the inside scoop: Tanna Barry, the boss Tanna got really mad at me once because I forged a message from "Myra Maines." The phone number on it was for a local mortuary and when Tanna called and asked for Ms. Maines, the guy on the other end yelled at her. I guess morticians don't have a sense of humor. Tanna wasn't pleased, but I think she smiled about it at some point later on. Jeremy Dustin, Mr. Color The Signpost had many issues in color. That's because Jeremy was able to sell it to our advertisers. That isn't easy because it's hard to get people to advertise with us anyway. Ryan Rogers and Brian Hugo, the graphic gurus For the second year in a row I succeeded in making these guys hate me. Well, I don't think they hate me, they just got fed up with my last minute requests. I can't say that I blame them, although you can't rush genius ... Devon Crus, child of Satan She may deny it, but Devon is the child of Satan. I swear I saw the budding horns ... To her credit, Devon takes my "devilish" abuse well. She even told her mom that I think she's Satan. So one day, I answered the phone and this voice on the other end said, "Hello, this is Satan." I just about wet myself. Jennifer Larson, Jenny-Penny Jenny was a late-comer to the staff, but ended up being one of the coolest. The staff trip to St. George was a lot of fun, mostly because we all got to know Jenny a little bit better. Andee Hales, Amanda Goodsell and Phil Ludlow, the go-getters It was rare to see these three faces in the newsroom. That's because they were always out getting the story or getting the job done. Their efforts are really appreciated. Casey Cummings, Mr. Grammar Corner I don't think anybody appreciated Allison's Grammar Corner more than Casey. Casey was also pretty good at taking the heat from the V.'SUS A Senate. He was the only staff member who regularly attended the meetings and often had to be the one to listen to the complaining. 1 ,-W ",v,--..w.,.,. Brandy Lee, Ms. Photo Request For the second year in a row, I succeeded in making Brandy hate me (This is a common theme.) For some reason, I had trouble getting my photo requests in. But if it weren't for Brandy's patience and understanding that I am an idiot, we would have never had art. Thanks Brandy. Amiee Kaulback, Ashley Hughes and Stuart Clark, the photogs. As you already know, I wasn't very good at turning photo requests. So thanks are in order to these lovely people for putting up with the barrage of late requests. Adam Reynolds, the night guy Adam dutifully did his work late at night when the rest of us were gone and getting sleep. He even did the job sometimes with a computer that crashed on him four times in one night! Heather Wheatley, the generous one When Heather and I went down to Salt Lake City to interview for a position at the Deseret News, we decided to grab a snack at the ZCMI Center food court. We were at Dairy Queen and Heather bought me an Orange Julius. It was nice. Thanks, Heather. Linda Cammack, Linda! Linda! Linda! Linda and I go way back. All the way back to 1999. And while we 7 differ in many areas (She's nice, I'm rude. She has taste, I don't. She's smart, I'm not ...), we had a lot of fun. I don't think Linda knows how much our friendship has meant to me. Thanks! Stephanie Hansen, the runner Stephanie and I had this great conversation once about how all runners are crazy, and since she's a member of WSU's track and field team, it was easy for her to understand that. Not only is she crazy, she's a great athlete, a great copy editor and a great person. Jarrod Hiatt, Mr. Sports There's nobody I like talking sports with more than Jarrod. Although, I have to say that anybody who is as passionate about every sports team from Indiana has to be a little off ... Jamie Peterson, Ms. Versatility Is there anything Jamie can't do? She can write. She can play basketball. She can joke around. She can even model. She is one of those few people who can make you smile no matter what's going on. Steve Wozniak, Mr. BYU I remember seeing Steve at a WSU basketball game wearing a BYU baseball cap. In fact, Steve was competing in the free throw shootout and refused to remove it then. Gotta love a guy who's pas ISfv. JW ' J - 1 OS off sionate. But you can't necessarily love a guy for liking BYU ... Carolyn Losee, the nicest person ever I once told Carolyn that I tease those I like the most, so she must think I really like her. But I do. She's a great person and wonderful staff member, even though she's old (HA! HA! HA!). Allison Hess, the mediator Allison always had a diplomatic solution to every problem. Compromise and respect were always two important factors for Allison, and it showed in the way she handled the staff. Georgia Edwards, "I'll miss you most of all, Scarecrow." Georgia is one of those people you don't forget. I will never forget how she smiles everytime I walk into the office. Or how she handles angry readers. Or how she brings in snacks sometimes. It's time for the obligatory cliche: Georgia is the glue that keeps The Signpost together!" Jayanne Miller, mini-Georgia Anybody who helps make Georgia's job a little easier is all right . with me. She's also good for a solid conversation every now and then. You can reach reporter Jose Carvajal by calling 626-76 1 4. |
