Show Wednesday, December 6, 2000 THE SIGNPOST Page 13 Homeless continued from front i -- I Wade also mentioned that they try to make the atmosphere so that one can't tell the homeless people from volunteers. 'They just don't differentiate," Wade said. 'They're out there helping people." Suzette Cottrell. a former WSU student, is heading up the project this year, and the party will be held at her parents' home. The goal of it is to provide an avenue to give and receive," Cottrell said. She also said that they want everyone to feel like they're part of a big family, so it will be hard to tell who is giving and who is receiving. Cottrell said that she doesn't really know what to expect Dec. 23, the day of the party. "Every day there's something new that happens," she said. "Every year is totally different. There are different gifts and different resources." Even though there have been huge turnouts in the past, Cottrell said there has always been plenty of donations of gifts for the homeless, even with items left over. "Last year, a big truck and a trailer pulled up and they just unloaded and unloaded," she said. Several items can be donated. Sharmea has a donation box by the Greek offices and student activities. Suzette Cottrell, a former WSU student and size, lap quilts tied with a ribbon, new and used toys, stuffed animals, books, coloring activity bags, clothing, shoes, socks, coats, boots, gloves and hats. Wade said she likes to help because she gets a feeling inside that she's helped someone and possibly even saved a life, because they are in such need of items to keep warm. They appreciate the help they can get," she said. "The year I was there, the lady I was helping seemed pretty gracious. It's hard when you're homeless." Cottrell commented that being involved with the project has given her an early holiday start. "My Christmas has started early in that it's been very fulfill ing in the way people are excited to give," she said. The giving is not just seen with the Sharmea sorority. Organizations all over campus are involved in projects. The Child and Family Studies Department is currently running a successful food drive. There is the "giving angel tree" outside the student activities office where one can pick a card off the tree and buy a gift for the person listed. These are only a couple of the many projects students and faculty are giving their time and energy to. Cottrell believes it the best route to go.
