Show Wednesday, November 29, 2000 THE SIGNPOST Page 5 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Students can judge effective or ineffective I am writing in response to the comments made by Dr. Eric Amsel and Dr. Ron Holt regarding student access to faculty evaluations. I would like to commend the two professors for taking a leadership role in this very controversial matter. It is about time that someone sets forth some requirements regarding the free access of information, and what better criteria than general competency. Although the students' desire to communicate their opinions about professors may be one of those protected First Amendment rights, Dr. Amsel and Dr. Holt astutely point out that as students we likely lack the capacity to interpret complex words like "effective," and intricate questions like "was this teacher effective?" This is such a good point that I think it should be expanded to all First Amendment protected activities. A committee should be formed immediately who knows how much information has escaped to the incompetent public already with Dr. Amsel and Dr. Holt as the directors. Then they can be faculty certified to receive other related controversial material such as newspapers and Internet access. Thost who fail to be faculty certified could receive Moron passes. This would save the school endless trouble. If a student with a Moron pass wishes to register for a class that may contain controversial material, they would be stopped before any trouble began. "Sorry, you don't have the capacity for this class." Students who graduate without ever obtaining this certification could be allowed to keep their Moron pass which would entitle them to important government welfare programs. Additionally, they would be limited in access to TV, movies and books that would not be morally questionable, ethically objectionable, or intellectually stimulating. Of course expanding this to the national level will take a lot of time and effort; however, with the leadership of professors like these it can happen.
