The college of arts and humanities at Wcbcr State University will present a showing at the "Celebrate the Arts" event on Oct. 3. The event goes from noon until 8 p.m. at the David Eccles Conference Center. The college includes the department of communications, English, foreign language, performing arts and visual arts, as well as the journal "Weber Studies," and the office of cultural affairs. Arts and humanities senator Karin Bates will be supervising the event as part of her duties as the college representative to the WSU Student Senate. "I'm proud to be associated with such an active college," she said, in press information. "I always knew how much the performing arts department produces because, as a member of the Symphonic Band, the Concert Choir and the Percussion Ensemble, I have performed a lot. As I learn more about our college, I can see how much our other departments do." Student and faculty members will be scheduled throughout the day to present material on the various artistic products of the college. Performing arts will send several performing groups, including the WSU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Donald Keipp; the Ogdcn Concert Band, a community band directed by Thomas Root; and the Weber State Symphony Orchestra, directed by Michael Palumbo. "We will perform most the same music that will be performed on our Sunday concert the next day," Palumbo said. The orchestra is scheduled to play "K136, 137, 138," "Elegiac Melodies" and verses from some of Mozart works. Sherwin Howard, WSU theater instructor, will be reciting his own poetry. The department will also be distributing its newsletter, which has a calendar of the events scheduled for fall semester. The English department has at least two faculty members represented: Levi Peterson, will be reading his short stories from a group of fiction writers. Professor Brad Roghaar will be reciting some of his own poetry from a new manuscipt entitled "A Stand of Aspens." "The manuscript is a group of poems dealing with places people go to heal themselves," Roghaar said. "To actually rejuvinate ourselves. Also representing the English department are students from "Metaphor," who will be distributing copies of the student literary magazine. Carl Porter will be presenting information about the National Undergraduate Literature Conference presented each year at WSU. He will have copies of books printed as a result of the conference. In addition, the foreign language departments will have copies of their multi-language literary magazine, "Voices," and visual arts will be distributing a schedule of gallery exhibits and their visiting artist lecture series."The celebration has been designed to be as least expensive as possible so everyone can attend."
