Fielding editor in chiefs -The Signpost An open door at the Wattis Business Building early Wednesday morning led to the arrest of a39-year-old student on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. Weber State Police Corp. Wynn Wright was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he noticed an open door and several open windows at the Wattis Business Building. As Wright approached the building, he noticed the lights in Room 270 were also on, WSPD reports state. Wright entered the office and discovered a 39-year-old Weber State University student downloading and printing pornographic photographs, some of which were of pre-pubescent boys and girls, from the computer located in the office. Wright questioned the man about his activities and discovered that the man's sister is an assistant professor of business and had given him permission to use her office and computer, according to police reports. The man allegedly told Wright he had gotten the keys from his niece. Wright then confiscated the pornographic material and the keys the man had used to gain entry to the building and the office. A few hours later, WSPD Sgt. Dane LeBlanc and Officer Jerry Anderson contacted the individual at his Washington Terrace home and asked him to come the WSPD offices for questioning, according to police reports. The man talked with LeBlanc and Anderson for some time and agreed to allow officers to search his home. Officers then returned with the suspect to his home and discovered more pornographic material, including magazines, brochures and videotapes, LeBlanc said. In addition, the man reportedly had kept records of where and when he had purchased some of the pornographic items. "We took an extremely large quantity of pornographic material out of his home," LeBlanc said. The suspect's pornography collection filled a table in a conference room at the WSPD offices which measures approximately 10 feet long and 3 feet wide.
