Crystal Howe uses the phrase "dominate and destroy" as her personal motto. Although it is not easy to tell by her smile and warm personality, she is living up to this slogan very well. Howe leads the Big Sky Conference this season in rebounding with almost 10 boards per game. The fifth-year senior is Weber State University's second-leading scorer with just fewer than 13 points a game. She has made the All-Big Sky Conference team twice. Howe earned the Big Sky Freshman of the Year award in 2000. The 6-foot-4-inch center is not one to boast about her achievements. "I wouldn't be able to get those awards or those titles without my teammates," Howe said. "I obviously can't bring the ball down the court to myself." Howe played a huge part in the Wildcats' first-ever Big Sky basketball championship last year. All the hard work of 2002 paid off for Howe and the Wildcats as the championship banner was unfurled before the Big Sky home opener against Northern Arizona University. "We deserved it and it felt great to see it," she said. "Hopefully, we'll go back-to-back this year." Coach Carla Taylor has nothing but good things to say about her most experienced player. "She has a great work ethic," Taylor said. "She's huge for our program." Taylor also said the key to the Wildcats' repeating as conference champions this year is on Howe's shoulders. "I've said all along that Crystal Howe has been an X-factor for us," Taylor said. Howe's experience brings a big presence to the team. Having already graduated last spring, Howe said she has a big responsibility to lead the team. "air mi wa&tittf "Being a fifth-year senior, you know a lot more than what the younger girls know," she said. WSU freshman Sheila Robertson also sees the significance of Howe's role to the team. "She's the one that talks a lot and directs us," Robertson said. Howe graduated last May with a degree in technical sales and is now working on a second major in communications. Besides basketball, spending time with her family is her biggest hobby. "I love being with my family," she said. Howe credits her family with her success in basketball. Howe's uncle, former WSU basketball player Rob Thomas, and her older brother have helped her with her game. Howe has hopes of playing professional basketball either in the United States or overseas. Where she plays doesn't matter to her. "I've always wanted to play professional ball," she said. You can reach reporter Jared Benware by calling 626-7983. a Hurry! Your time is running out!
