It was taught experimentally last spring to 11 students and has doubled in size this quarter. By next year the class, which has received a Hemingway Award and funding from the Area Vocational Center, will be a permanent part of the College of Health Professions curriculum. Throughout the quarter, students will visit a nursing home to provide the elderly with mind and body health care assessments. "The environment of a nursing home was selected because it has a history of effectively utilizing interdisciplinary teams," Anderson said. "Another advantage to nursing homes was the endear ing qualities of the clients with whom the students would work." One of the main areas the class will focus on is a technique called Validation Therapy. This technique allows the caregiver to validate rather then analyze the feelings of the client. The overall objective is to give the person a moment of joy rather than to add to their frustration. When emotional memories are validated, the person is able to regain their dignity. Validation therapists will go with the elderly person mentally, where they are to help prevent them from digressing.Anderson has worked with the elderly for a number of years and is excited about this new program. "We have isolated the elderly and haven't had the skills to treat them. Enhancing their quality of life is the very least they deserve," she said. mm in n B4 U k4 mm SELL YOUR BOOKS BACK TO rt x Bay bach begins Tuesday O May 28, 1996 |
