Writer blames capitalism as culprit of enviornmental conflict To the editor, The Honors Issues Forum this week discussed the merits of ecoterrorism. According to John Stuart Mill there is a case to be made for ecoterrorism, although this case was not clearly presented. Mill bases his arguments on the premise that what ever promotes the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of interests is the course of action that should be taken. From this view point a few damaged bulldozers are worth the uncountable lives of future generations. It was even alluded that the current amount of people on the earth are a problem of the Forest Service. The environmental problem is only a symptom of a bigger problem that was ignored. The real problem is the capitalist idea that is so dominant in the world. The Forest Service is only a cog in the capitalist mechanism and should be viewed as such. I feel the FBI would be justified in going to whatever means is necessary to enforce these laws. Even if the means entails the taking of life ." Jason Aurich Sophomore, Zoology "Whenever a cult poses a threat to society or themselves, some action certainly needs to be taken to prevent anyone from getting hurt, but otherwise they should be at most monitored and left tlr themselves." Brad Smith Senior, chemistry "I don't think they should because it takes away the privacy of the people who are involved in that particular group. It violates the first amendment of the Constitution. We should learn from the incidents that occured last week in Waco, Texas to have respect for the FBI, because they did their job." Corwin Jackson Junior, political science "The FBI should also realize that cult merr.bers have rights too." Shauna Goodfellow Freshman, general ed. "No. In view of what happened in Waco, backing off would have seemed the more appropriate action, there's little doubt that FBI action in this case precipitated the mass suicide, including innocent children." Jan Blackburn Sophomore, English "The FBI shouldn't get involved with religious cults unless these cults infringe on the rights of others and cause harm." Christina Robinson Sophomore, undecided |
