Show 'Cats send five on trip, team rests All but five runners on the Weber Sta te University men's and women's track teams will have this weekend off. Men's coach Chick Hislop will escort the five athletes to the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wise, Saturday. On the men's side, Robby Duncan, Matt Godfrey, Guy Perry and Jed Johansen will be running the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Shawna Cox will be the lone representative of the women's team as she competes in the 1,500-meters."Coach Martin Smith at Wisconsin has set up a national class field in the steeplechase," Hislop said. "There will be 12 runners who are capable of making NCAA qualifying times, and four of them will be from Weber State." Hislop said he's looking for at least an eight second improvement from each runner. Duncan already has an NCAA provisional time of fi;55.7S. An eight second improvement on that time would give him a much better shot in the provisional category. The NCAA automatic qualifying time is 8:44. Cox will be in a field with three other runners who have reached the NCAA provisional time. She has the best time in the Big Sky Conference this year at 4:22.60. The NCAA automatic qualifying : a .i n rrn nine is t.i.ju. The rest of the team will be preparing for the Idaho State Twilight State Meet held May 10, in Pocatello, Idaho. Both Hislop and women's coach Jim Blaisdell said they are using the Twilight State Meet as a final tune-up for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships on May 18-21 in Missoula, Mont. Both coaches have qualified nearly everyone they need for those championships. Hislop indicated he will try to get Billy Schuffenhaur qualified in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Schuffenhaur has a season best of 55.44 and needs a 54.80 or better for Big Sky qualifying. The ISU meet begins with field events at 3 p.m. and running events at 4 p.m. The Wildcats will compete along with host Idaho State, Utah State, Ricks College, College of Southern Idaho and individuals from various Big Sky Conference schools. Holt said he would like to see WSU gain more recognition for their club, possibly by making martial arts an emphasis to a major. The martial arts club provides classes Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday in the HPEC. Despite an up and down year, Smith is looking at the future optimistically. This year's entire team will be returning next year, and the Lady Wildcats have added three new recruits. Smithfeelsthe combination of experience and added players will give the team internal competition andthedepth that hasn't been there this year. "EScaSFoS Shame" President Dwight D.
