By TROY LYBBERT Signpost sports writer Despite windy conditions in Boise, the Weber State University men's and women's track teams fared well against its competition this weekend.. The women placed second, 50 points behind the highly toutedUni-versity of Oregon, while the men took third in BoiseState University's Bronco Quadrangular track and field meet held Saturday at Bronco Stadium. "Oregon is a big-time track team, and it is always fun to run against them," women's coach Jim Blaisdell said. WSU's Shawna Cox came up big for the Wildcats, having a record breaking performance in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:07.79 set a new Bronco Stadium record, beating the old record by just under two tenths of a second. Cox also set a new Wildcat record with her time and provi-sionallyqualified herforthe NCAA Outdoor Championships "It was great considering we were running in 15 to 20 mile per hour wind gusts," Blaisdell said. Jeni Holbrook was the only other Lady 'Cat to pick up a win as she placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 56.09. Renae Friend had a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, a throw good enough for second place. She also placed second in the discus. . "Renae is continuing to improve," Blaisdell said. "Each meet she gets better." . The men placed third in the meet, a mere 3 and 12 points behind BSU, but coach Chick Hislop was still happy with his team's results."Oregon has a reputation for being one of the best distance programs in the country," Hislop said. "We beat them in three of the four distance events." WSU's Matt Godfrey came up big in the 1,500 meters placing first with a time of 3:57.2. This was Godfrey's first running of the 1,500 meters this season. WSU's Kurt Black continued to run well in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His time of 8:47.27 was an NCAA qualifying mark. Black also placed second in the 5,000 meters. Scott Fowers won the hammer throw for the Wildcats and placed second in the discus. The placings were important to Fowers because he ed ged ou t top BigSky contender, Chuck McTheny from BSU, in both events. Joe Kelsey came from behind and won the javelin event on his final throw with a distance of 208 feet, 8 inches. WSU's Billy Schuffenhaur placed second in thelongjump with a distance of 24 feet, 3 inches. He also took fourth in the high jump.
