Show Wednesday, May 8, 1991 THE SIGNPOST 9 Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet to grace our humble town Ballet to only visit Ogden between Chicago and West Coast In a continuing battle to bring cultural edification to our community, WSU's Office of Cultural Affairs is proud as peaches to present the Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet in their only appearance between Chicago and the West Coast on Mayl7andl8at8p.m.intheValA. Browning Center. The Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, featuring Prima Ballerina Natalya Bessmertnova, is a company of 30 dancers drawn from the Bolshoi Ballet. The Bolshoi Ballet, whose very name means "big," has more than 300 dancers. It is a company dedicated to the boldest and most exhilarating performance. Big in style, aspiration, and achievements, the Bolshoi Ballet is a theatrical marvel. For more than 200 years there has been ballet in Moscow; housed in a succession of theatres that culminated in the Bolshoi Theatre, which opened in 1856 and has been the Ballet's home ever since. There, the Ballet Company has delighted audiences through dancing charged with emotion and vitality and was able to develop an identity and retain the potent sense of drama that is their hallmark. The United States tour by the Stars of Bolshoi, a group of top soloists, makes it possible to show the essence of the company, the style and classical strength in venues both large and small across the country. Prima Ballerina Natalya Bessmertnova has danced many of the great roles of the ballet since joining the Bolshoi and has often been called this century's greatest Giselle. Renowned for her style, elegance, and technical brilliance, she has been partnered by such stars as Yuri Grigorovich, Irek Mokhamedov and Mikhail Lavrovsky. This spring Bessmertnova leads a cast including Yuri Vladi-mirov, Mikhail Gabovich, Marina Kotova, Marina Leonova, Inna Pet-rova and Boris Yefimov. Selection from the most beloved Russian ballets will be performed such as Swan Lake, Le Corsaire, Spartacus, Giselle, Don Quixote, The Golden Age and La Esmeralda. The company will perform the second act of Swan Lake, which is said to be one of the greatest scenes in the Russian classical repertoire. Frequently shown on its own, it shows the first meeting between Prince Siegfried and the Swan Queen Odette. Siegfried has come at nightfall to the shores of a lake in pursuit of a flight of swans he has seen from his palace gardens. As the swans land, they are transformed into young maidens. Their Queen, Odette, tells Siegfried that they are tinder the spell of Rothbart, an evil magician, who forces them to assume the shape of swans by day. Only by night are they able to return to human form. This enchantment is broken when a man swears to love Odette faithfully. Siegfried enraptured by Odette's beauty and plight, swears to love her, but as dawn breaks, Odette and her maidens must become swans again, leaving Siegfried alone and distraught.Yuri Grigorovich created one of the most popular ballets in the Soviet repertoire when he staged his version of "Spartacus" for the Bolshoi Ballet in 1968. This famous adagio for the hero Spartacus and his wife Phrygia reveals the poetic force of their love for each other even as prepare for the last battle. Another of the many renditions of the ballets to be performed will be adapted scenes from Cervantes' epic novel "Don Quixote." This version was created at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow inr869. Later choreographers, notably Alexander Gorsky, have edited the staging, but it remains one of the most popular and joyous ballets. The Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet are presented by arrangement with Yuri Grigorovich, Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre and the directors of the Bolshoi Ballet and Opera Theatre in Moscow. mm 1 1 V 1 1 IMIIIIltlM ...
