Show Wednesday, May 8, 1991 Speakers to discuss influence of paradigms in writing Thiokol will be speaking on Paradigms and how they can affect the fluency of your writing along with Linda Paralez, the senior program manager specialist for total quality management. They will give a presentation about why paradigms are important to writers and what it means to bring to industry writing skills in concert with paradigm flexibility. "People need to learn how to be flexible in their writing style. Paradigms are the structure of a persons thoughts and can have a limit on their creativity." said Diane Kulkarni, coordinator of the Writing Center. A video entitled "Discovering the Future: The Business of Para digms" will illustrate people's fear of change and how to cope with it and be more fluent in the changing and writing process. "Paradigms are not necessarily negative but can have negative effects." said Paralex. "Writing in the Marketplace is an educational program designed as an incentive for students to strive for writing excellence. Good writing skills in the business and professional fields are essential to success and promotion so we encourage all students to attend." said Kulkarni. During the day, there will be presentations by prominent physicians, social workers, and other professionals as they discuss the most current information on substance abuse. Two sessions feature a nationally-known presenter, consultant and author, Tim Burns. Burns wrote "Anatomy of a Crisis: The Effects of Alcohol and Other Drugs on the Growing Brain, Mind and Spirit." He is from the University of Mexico and will be the guest speaker at this week's convocation. In the evening, there will be a sports panel consisting of several local and national sports figures including Al Coons, scout and special project coordinator for the Chicago Cubs and the Seattle Mariners and Dave Arslanian, head football coach for WSU. They will discuss substance abuse in the locker room. Participants will have the opportunity to network with other professionals and conference participants and Continuing Education Credits will be available. Young said medical personnel could also make their licenses current and that similar sessions would cost substantially more if taken at the U of U. The day session, 8:30-5 p.m., costs $35 and the night session from 7.-9 is free. Lunch and breaks are provided for day registrants and is prepared by the Marriot Corporation.
