The Wildcats face Idaho State and Montana State at the ISU Track Stadium this coming Saturday, May 4, beginning at 11:00 a.m. WSU coach, Chick Hislop, says the entire team will be on hand and ready for a final tune-up before conference. The Wildcats have won the conference crown nine times and need three more titles to tie Idaho, which has 12 conference crowns. The Wildcats have only two returning players from last year's squad. Dermot Sweeney wasrunner-up at number one singles, losing only to NAU's Michael Tebb-utt. Sweeney and doubles partner, Ian MacKinlay placed second at number one doubles as well. The Wildcats are 13-8 in dual matches this season. Their last action came on Tuesday, April 23, losing to perennial power Utah, 6-3, in a dual match held at Weber. Cox, who is in his 18th season at the Wildcat helm, says it will be a tight race. This year's championship format takes on a different twist. In year's past, every team in the league has been at the championship and a round-robin was played, or divisional play sent six teams to the championships for round-robin action. This year, the format calls for drawing into "pods." There will be three pods with three teams in each pod. The number's 1-2-3 teams will be in a different pod- to begin with. Each pod is a miniature round-robin. The team with the best record in each pod then advances. Thursday's first round draw takes place on Wednesday and play begins Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. ASWSU 5K Twilight Run is set The 5K Twilight Run around Weber State's campus is set for May 3. Pre-registration will be on Friday May 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p jn. The race will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the South parking lot of the Dee Events Center. The fees for the 5K (3.1 miles) are $8 for early registration which includes a shirt and $3 for late registration(no shirt). Sports Briefs BRUINS WIN SERIES: The Boston Bruins ended a Game 7 drought against the Montreal Canadiens with a 2-1 win Monday in the NHL's Adams Division final. Boston, previously 0-3 in Game 7 playoff history against Montreal, will open the Prince of Wales Conference final at home Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dave Christian and Cam Neely scored for the Bruins. PHILLIES TOP PADRES: Dale Murphy drove in three runs with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 7-2 for their third consecutive victory. In the only other NL game, Ozzie Smith tied the game in the seventh inning and won it with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 11th as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3. KANSAS CITY TOPS DETROIT: Steve Searcy and Paul Gibson combined to shut down Kansas City and the Detroit Tigers beat the Royals 3-1. Alan Trammell had two run-scoring singles. Searcy (1-1), who failed to get out of the second inning in his previous start, pitched 5 innings. In the only other AL game: The Seattle Mariners pounded the Baltimore Orioles 10-1. FOUR TEAMS LOOK FOR SWEEPS: Chicago, Portland, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Lakers will be going for first-round three-game sweeps Tuesday as the NBA playoffs resume. The 76ers are at home against Milwaukee, while the others are on the road. The Lakers are at Houston, the Trail Blazers at Seattle and the Bulls at New York.
