Sports Editor of 77ie Signpost Competition for Weber State men's track team took place at Idaho State's Mayfest Track Meet Saturday. It was a mediocre day for the team as they placed third behind Montana and Idaho State University. Not all performances were mediocre for the Wildcats though as they had five first place finishes: Craig Povey in the javelin, Duane West in the 3,000 meter steeple chase, DanBairdin the 100 meters, Brad Barton in the 1500 meters, and Colby Gray in the high jump. Povey had a seasonal best throw of 198-1, winning the javelin. "Povey beat the number two conference thrower from Montana State by thirteen feet," said Assistant Coach Dan Walker. Tovey has just been throwing consistently over 195, which is great." Action in the 3,000 meter steeple chase came from Duane West who won it in a time of 9:26.29. Shawn Singleton, with a strong kick, took third and also obtained an eight second personal record in the steeple chase. alenf Show J- -jv. D" rolls over offense in annual PurpleWhite spring football game Weber State's football team may have the highest scoring defense in the nation. The white clad defense racked up 53 points against the offense Saturday afternoon in the annual Purple White game at Wildcat Staduim. Because only 50 players in spring drills, WSC Head Coach Dave Arslanian opted to go with one squad of offense and one squad of defense rather than two full teams of offense and defense. So how did the defense score so much? Well, they were given scoring opportunities. For example, stopping the offense without a score was worth two points, turnovers were worth three and sacks worth one. The "D" held the offense scoreless 19 times. Arslanian singled out the effort of defensive lineman Kris Heindel, who picked up two sacks during the game. Senior defensive backs Maurice Jackson and Jody Marshall also played well, each intercepting a pass. Even with the great playing of the defense, the offense was not at all dormant. Quarterbacks Jamie Martin and Ryan Schmidt each unveiled rocket arms, though most passes dropped incomplete. Schmidt did complete one perfect pass, a 46-yard strike to junior wide receiver Jon Fuller. Fuller was the offensive hero, pulling in eight passes for 131 yards. Rick Justice added three receptions for 72 yards, while Trevor Shaw had five catches for 51 more yards. Running back George Jackson ran the ball 12 times for 97 yards, while freshman Alex Lindert picked up 84 more yards on 12 carries. The offense finished the day with 118 plays and just 32 points.
