By Tammy Goulding Staff writer of The Sgnpost Campus Life. ..Campus Recreation. To some individuals these terms denote only participation in intramurals or bowling at the Wil dcat Lanes. But John Knight, Weber State College Director of Campus Recreation and a 1968 WSC graduate, has developed campus life to be more than just these two experiences. Since coming to WSC in 1973 as director of men's intramurals, Knight has transformed the operation into a diversified k vvsn earn business including wilderness recreation, informal recreation, sports clubs, Wildcat Lanes and an intramural sports program that has served 4,000 participants this year alone. His philosophy of campus recreation is succinct."Campus recreation should be a laboratory for students, faculty and staff to develop a healthy lifestyle by allowing individuals to recreate as a part of their educational experience," said Knight. This outlook on recreation had its beginnings at Capuchino High School (Calif.) as Knight participated in athletics and began "recreating." As a California prep football standout, Knight was recruited by then WSC Head Coach Sark Arslanian to play for the 'Cats in 1965. While playing a myriad of positions including offensive guard and tackle and outside linebacker, he was named First Team Big Sky Tight End as well as receiving the coaching staffs Most Inspirational Award in 1967. Upon graduation, the department of health, physical education, recreation and dance (HPERD) also awarded Knight the Outstanding Male Leader Award. Knight continued on into the professional football ranks as defensive end for the Pittsburgh L News Steelers after graduating in 1968. When he returned to California after playing professional football, Knight realized that the beauty and lifestyle of Utah was what he wanted for his family. "As a person matures, they realize that times change and values change. The folks that I had grown up with had changed," said Knight in describing his choice to return to Ogden. "I wanted to raise my family here." (See KNIGHT on page 7) (0Q he Wildernes Recreation Center is moving to the new gymnasium and w .AfV 0 .oti0 For more information call 626-6373 |
