Show The Arts UMT brings 'Evita' to Weber State for its final show of the year By Catherine Sadler Staff writer of The Signpost The steamy political arena of Argentina sets the stage for the final leg of the Utah Musical Theatre's world tour when "Evita" is presented August 9 - 18. This Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster promises to finish off the season with a bang. Lloyd Webber, composer of several multi-billion dollar smash-hit musicals, including "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera," first presented "Evita" in London with Elaine Paige in the leading role. The show then moved to Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Musical. "Evita" tells the story of Eva Peron, the Argentine peasant who slept her way to the top, eventually marrying Juan Peron to become the First Lady of Argentinia. She then embarked on the famous Rainbow Tour to boost Argentina's international image. Worshipped by the poor and scorned by the rich, she had a personality that molded an entire country. Eventually, however, she died of internal cancer. Lainie Gulliksen (of Atlanta, Georgia) will be portraying Eva Peron, a character that has fascinated her ever since the show was originally produced. Lego Louis, who recently starred in the Utah State University production, will reprise the role of Che, whose lifelong obsession was to destroy Eva Peron. The role of Juan Peron will be played by David Kelso. The production will be V I . J I ; V ' I : i : I ' . - -. l a?' ! . " : i ! ' (' i - V . I if- ' ? " i T C ! ; V if ... Mark Howard Arts editor of The Signpost Last Sunday evening, The Renaissance Chamber Ensemble took the "stage" at WSC's Centennial Outdoor Amphitheatre, just as the sun was sinking behind the mountains in poster worthy splendor and twilight's warm wanning light : fell upon the backdrop of Mt. Ogden giving it a beautiful sunset lumination as the sky above slowly darkened. Only a particular sort of music goes well with quasi-magical sunsets such as Sunday's and the Renaissance Chamber Emsemble knew just the proper mixture of music to play. The Renaissance Chamber Ensemble opened their suite with works by Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899), including the beautiful "Blue Danube" which was used in Stanley Kubrick's film, "2001: A Space Odyessy" and Tales from the Vienna Woods." Johann Strauss, Jr. is popularly known as the "Waltz King" and as being one of Vienna's most famous composers. Approximately three fourths of the program consisted of works by Strauss and the last portion was used to perform three works by the avante garde French composer, Achilles Claude Debussy (1862-1918).i :s A humorous situation arose when the automatic sprinkler system suddenly came to life and gave a handful of startled music lovers an unexpected shower. This proved to be only a minor inconvenience and the emsemble was playing away after the wet people staked out drier spots to spread out their blankets. : Scott Birkenshaw, the group's leader and an instructor of Library Science here at WSC, has been working with the group for five years now. He said that the "Renaissance" in their title refers to a "rebirth" and not to that : historical era following the Middle Ages; hence the reason they played Strauss and Debussy instead of "Renaissance" music. Birkinsha w also said that the gentle and relaxing music of Debussy along with the moving music of Strauss' waltzes were apropos with the outdoor settir g in which they were performed. With no admitance fee, these Twilight Concerts are a steal. The only thing risked is the off-chance of having the sprinklers you might unwittingly be sitting near suddenly perform their duty. On August 12, the "William Pitt Band" will be performing and for the final performance "The Brass Quintet" will play August 19 in the Austad Auditorium. Both shows will begin at 8 pm. and no admission fee. - QadtvaCt & Woody PcnJi Concert 01 y 22 1 - .
