Since Webb returned from that trip the wrestling program at Weber State has never been the same The Russian wrestlers coach, John Webb, went have a year-round train- Campbell signs four Weber State women's basketball coach, Joan Campbell, announced the signing of four freshman to letters of intent to play basketball for the Lady Cats next season. Signing from the local area was Nancy Kirkpatrick, a 5-8 guard out of Davis High School. She was the Darts' most valuable player and averaged 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists per game last season. Kirkpatrick was also named All-State, All-Region and selected to four All-Area teams and was a member of the Junior Olympic and AAU All-Star teams. "We feel fortunate to have a player like Nancy from the Ogden area still available," said Coach Campbell, who had a late WSC recruitment start due to her coaching transition from Bemidji State in late April. "She's (Kirkpatrick) a very intelligent player, passes and shoots extremely well, has good court sense and should fit into our running game nicely." Barb Eide will also suit up for the Weber women and is from St. Louis Park, Minnesota. The 6'0 forward Eide led St. Louis Park High School to the Minnesota Class 2A State Championship last year and to the consolation championship her junior year. Eide averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds last season while shooting 49 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free-throw line. Eide was named MVP of the Minnesota All-Star game and was also honored as the top player on her high school team. She is a two-time All-State honorable mention and an All-Lake Conference selection two years in a row. Eide earned a spot on the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro All-Star team while setting 10 season basketball records and three career records. Some of those records include most rebounds (716) and most points (991). "We are extremely pleased to sign a recruit in the caliber of Barb Eide," said Campbell. "Barb played in one of the toughest and most competitive conferences in the state of Minnesota and her statistics are well earned. We project her as a forward who can play both inside and out for us." Two additional freshman recruits were signed from Fountain Valley High School in California. Teammates Dawn Lawler, a 6'0 forward, and 5'8 guard Susan Walin helped lead Fountain Valley to a three-year record of 68-16 while winning three consecutive Sunset League championships. Walin was named her team's most valuable player in basketball as well as in track and averaged 10 points, four rebounds and four assists last year on the court. She was a three-time All-Conference selection and was also named to the Far West All-Star team and two All tournament teams. "Susan should be a real asset to our running game with her quickness and ball-handling, "said Campbell. "She is an excellent shooter and is versatile enough to be able to play either the point or wing guard position." Lawler a three-year letter winner herself averaged 12 points and eight rebounds a game to help lead Fountain Valley to a 24-6 record last season. A three-time Far West All-Star Team selection, Dawn was voted the Most Improved Player and received the Special Coaches Award at Fountain Valley. She was also named to the Orange County All-Star Team. "Dawn has not come close to reaching her potential as a basketball player. She has good hands, is tremendously coachable and works hard. Having played in one of the best leagues in California, she's had the competition to develop in," said Campbell. ing program that impressed Webb, so much so, he implemented the program to his wrestlers. There is more than conditioning involved, training year round also includes the psychological aspects of the athletes. Webb has slowly developed the year round program, this year will be the first year of the complete training. The year round training program consists of; five months of competitive wrestling, six months of active training, and one month to rest. May, the pre-season starts off the training session. There are two types during the pre-season, the general and the specific preparatory stages. The general preparatory stage includes a lot of running and weight lifting and a little bit of wrestling. The specific preparatory stage increases the wrestling while maintaining the running and lifting levels. A typical schedule during the summer includes five days of wrestling, three days of running, and four days of lifting. How can this be done when there are only seven days a week? Two days a week a wrestler will wrestle, lift and run. Another two days wrestling and lifting is accomplished, and on the final day wrestling and running is done. That leaves the wrestler with the weekend off to recouperate. By the way, the wrestling sessions start (see GRAPPLERS on page 11) WSC netter wins Weber State men's tennis player Jonas Ehrlin is currently participating in the NCAA singles championships in Athens, Georgia. Ehrlin advanced to the second round with a win Wednesday as the competitors numbers dwindled to 32 players. Only the best 64 collegiate tennis players are selected from around the nation to compete in the tournament and this is the second year in a row Ehrlin has made an appearance in the NCAAs. Ehrlin is the fourth player from Weber State to be chosen to play in the NCAA meet. The other three WSC netters were Peter Markes, Barry Nissenbaum and Eric Styrmoe. . 41 - i - g.
