Show Signpost Friday, May 23, 1986 9 WSC thespians appear in PVP's Carousel r ) "y f 4 by Debra Ann Moss Staff Reporter If graduating from Weber State College with a degree in elementary education is not difficult enough, try returning for a second degree in art, making rehearsals in Salt Lake City, being a mother of four children and a wife of Weber County Attorney, David Hughes. Pat Farr Hughes is doing all this . . . and more. She is currently performing in the Promised Valley Playhouse production of Carousel which opened May 22 and runs nightly through June 14 in Salt Lake City. Some will remember Hughes performing in the Utah Musical Theatre's 1985 season in such roles as Marilla Cuthert in Anne of Green Gables and Miss Hannigan in Annie. With her background in theatre arts, she performed in Weber State Theatre's productions Guys and Dolls, The Seagull and Applause, and the Union Dinner Theatre production of Once Upon a Mattress. Hughes is also one of the founders of the Riverdale Community Theatre. She is not the only member of the production of Carousel affiliated with WSC. Brian W. West is a graduate of WSC, majoring in theatre arts. He has a number of production credits in his portfolio. He played the vampire count in Dracula fall quarter 1985. He directed Vanities and played Shylock in Weber State Theatre's production of The Merchant of Venice winter quarter. R. Seth Reines is a guest director from Chicago and should be remembered for directing the WSC productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Arms and the Man. He also directed some productions of the Utah Musical Theatre in 1985. He will return this season in the same capacity. Laura K. Love is set designer for Carousel. She did set designing for Weber State Theatre in 1984-85. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. nightly with a 2 p.m. matinee on June 7. According to the press release, "opening weekend audiences are invited to a reception immediately following the show to meet the director and cast." Tickets are available at the Promised Valley Playhouse box office, 132 S. State St., or by calling 364-5677. Group rates and special performances are also available. Award deadline draws near Nominations for the fifth annual Governor's Award for Folk Art are now being accepted by the Utah Arts Council. This award is designed to recognize an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to Utah's cultural heritage through the practice of a traditional art form. Living folk or ethnic craftsworkers, musicians, singers, storytellers and dancers are eligible for nomination. The award is not designed to honor scholars, organizers, writers or volunteers. Particular emphasis will be given to artistic excellence, authenticity and the traditional nature of the artist's work, as well as to the artist's influence on his or her community. Nominations are due by June 6, 1986 at the Utah Arts Council. Nomination forms can be obtained from the Council's Folk Arts Program, 617 East South Temple,.
