Show ProCon Signpost Tuesday, June 2, 1987 (cont'd from pKe 8) "The nicest thing 1 remember this year is the honor and friendship of the WSC Native American Council. The best lesson was to appreciate the love and friendship of my friends and family." Jeff Bybee, Signpost Photographer Letters ... "1 learned when to keep my mouth shut, which is generally most of the time, and I also learned how to spell the words clairificalion, raidio, kinde-garten, yesturday and pick nick." JaNae Barlow, Signpost Managing Editor "I learned to be responsible for the things that I wrote and how to be responsible to the people I'm writing about. I tried to make good judgements and accumulate all the information I could, never meaning to hurt anyone personally." Emilie Bean, Signpost SignOff Editor Cartoons bring nostalgic memories To the editor: As I noticed in last week's paper that new personnel were being appointed, I realized that the time had passed for me to write those numerousletters-to-the-editor. Even though these have been curtailed by the demands on time, I have reordered my priorities and must express my appreciation to the Signpost staff for the increasing quality and scope of coverage of recent years. I would also like to focus on one statement made in a long past editorial by M. Christenson who wondered if anyone cared about the cartoonists' efforts. At the risk of causing English professors to shrink, 1 must say that this statement brought nostalgic memories of a green-covered book pulled from my parents' vast library called Cartoon Cavalcade which was one of the most memorable and influential books of my childhood. It sparked my solemn world and education with cartoons by Ar-no. Price, Thurber and the creative inventions of Rube Goldberg. And there were the characters from my parents' generation: Mutt and Jeff, Alphonse and Gaston, Blondie and Dagwood (way back then), the Katzenjam-mer Kids, Casper Milquetoast, etc., etc. The political cartoons formed my historical background even before I understood their irony. Then in my generation, I became acquainted with Henry, Nancy and Sluggo, Li'l Lulu, Ziggy, Superman, Charlie Brown and countless others whose astuteness and ability to laugh at life have made it bearable. It is not likely that even M. Christenson of the television generation could imagine the wild anticipation of a child who grew up with Walt Disney's comics as she awaited that one-allowable, col- orful monthly copy. I even remember the succinct economics lesson given by D. Duck during the War (WW II!). When he discovered that his Duckmobile would balance on three wheels, he sold the fourth one. Needless to say, I, along with others, appreciate greatly the talents of all of you cartoonists for: the creation of Waldo (D.H.), the punny yet clever interpretation of world situations, and the poignant depiction of local political situations with between-the-eyes clout, brought not only by your mechanical skills (I'm glad to see the revival of cross-hatching), but also your abilities to make pithy, concise, visual statements that make a picture worth a thousand words and bring meaningful right-brained experiences to a left-brained society.
