Show '" Tjigipusi'i uciaay, June I, 16 1 WSC to offer credit to high school students Yun Hui Pak Assistant News Editor Weber State College and five local school districts have come up with a new "early program" that will go into effect next fall. The "early college" program is focused towards ambitious high school students who are trying to gain college credit during their high school years. The current program for such students offers three options: enroll in advanced placement high school courses that allow students to gain college credit if the students pass the final exam; enroll in college classes with other college students and hope the credit will be accepted by other institutions; or enroll in courses offered at night. Dr. Sherwin Howard, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Weber State, said, "this program will allow high school students to take a full load and also let them still participate in their extra-curricular high school activities." He also said the credits earned by these students will be accepted by most colleges and universities. The students who participate will take a "core" of general education classes from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. The classes will change each quarter, covering different subjects such as English, history and science. The college courses that these students take will be the same as those offered to regular students at Weber State, but will be taught in classes which have a majority of students who are in their beginning year of study. Through this program, students will be able to earn about 30 hours of credit, which is almost equivalent to one year of college. These courses will also be counted as high school credit. This program is not intended to take the place of the advanced placement courses (AP) currently taught in the high schools; however, the program allows the students to find out at the end of each quarter if they get college credit instead of waiting all year and taking the AP test. The source of money supplied for the program will come from the State Office of Education, the college, school districts and the students. The districts include Weber, Ogden, Davis, Box Elder and Morgan. (r OUT INTO THE COLD, CRUEL WORLD... Since the participants will be full-time students, they will pay full tuition costs. The school districts will pay for $200 of the $365 per quarter fee. The other $165 will come from the students, adding also the cost of books and travel. Weber State will contribute about $18,000 worth of teaching time. WSC faculty members and chosen high school teachers will teach the courses. Ann Milner from the Depart ment of Continuing Education at Weber State said a student director and some advisors will be hired to advise the students and coordinate arrangements between the college and the high schools. The Weber and Ogden school districts have shown a real interest in this program. Howard said, "A pilot group of about 50-60 students is our goal, and most of them will come from the districts of Weber and Ogden, mainly because they are the closest to thecampus."
