Vocalist Cassandra Ledbetter was accompanied by pianist Greg Smith as she sang two appropriate songs, "Let There Be Peace" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Father Thomas J. Meersman, director of Special Affairs for the Catholic Diocese of Utah, was the guest speaker and addressed the topic "What is so special about a veteran?" He noted that a military person is selected for duty because (s)he is special mentally alert, physically healthy and morally fit, as well as committed to fight to the death, if necessary, for freedoms around the world. "The tragedy of war," he said, "is that only the best are fit to be killed. ... What is really sad is that the serviceman is greatly loved during a war. During peacetime, the veterans are forgotten." Four scholarships were awarded to veterans who are students at WSC. Geoffery Westapher, distributive economics manager for the Jackson Distributing Company, associated with the Adolph Coors Company, personally handed these scholarships to the following persons: Donald Artis, a Vietnam Era veteran who is a senior and will complete requirements for a bachelor degree in logistics management next spring; Ernest R. Gardner, a post-Vietnam Era veteran who attended school part-time during his four years in the service. He is working one full-time and one part-time job to support his wife and two children; Anita Leigh also served during the Vietnam Era. She is a single parent of three children and will receive her certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse this June. She will continue to earn her R.N. through this scholarship; Charles K. McCollum has served in the reserve for eight years. He is a part-time security officer and a full-time patrolman. He has attended school part-time, maintaining a 3.3 GPA. He is married, has six children, and will now complete his final two quarters, obtaining a bachelor degree in law enforcement. |
