Show i signpost luesday, May 5, 1987 Pitt (cont'd from page 7) tempo, but came wonderfully together at the close. The next number was a happy little tune called "Shepherd's Hey" which had good oboe performances.Next performed was "El Capitan" by John Phillip Sousa. This march gave an excellent set-up for the tones of the featured piece, "The Testament of Freedom," with its patriotic stirrings and wonderful precision. The final selection for the evening was "Echoes of the 1860's," a collection of folk songs, dances and popular tunes of the era. Again the William Pitt Band came through. The flavor was rich as one was transported to an old-fashioned band concert in the park, popular in the late 1800's. The transitions from fast pieces to slower ones were much smoother, and as the chorus joined with a series of four "hurrahs," the performers well deserved each one. The Pitt band, conducted by Dr. William Root, and the chorus and band combined, conducted by Mr. Aden Baird, deserve all the accolades of a professional organization. Even though both groups are unpaid volunteers their performance and enthusiasm rivals most professional performers seen. It is nice to know that one can have an enjoyable experience in Ogden and not pay dearly for it. If you will pay the cost of your time and effort to attend, the value will far exceed the trouble. As volunteers playing a free concert, I was pleasantly surprised to find a well-polished production that excited as well aspleased. K v. ; - ; r- f. . y i - ' 1 '. ,'.:, . ' '. i i . h , t i ,-.
