Coping, handling stress differs among individuals by Penny RowLee Staff Reporter Spring quarter is nearly over, and stress builds as finals draw closer. There are many skills that can be learned to help reduce stress, said Dr. Bud Belnap. Belnap, associate professor of the health, physical education, dance and recreation department, will give suggestions on how to handle stress on May 29 during open hour in the Wattis Building, room 121. Stress is not all bad, he said. "It is a necessary element for productivity. If we didn't have a little agitation and stress, we wouldn't get anything done. It is people's attitude to the stress that cause the problem," Belnap said. Some people seem to be able to handle stress better than others. There are many factors that contribute to stress. Some of these factors are controllable and some are not. Heredity, environment and lifestyle are some of the factors that determine if a person is prepared to handle stress, he said. Not coping well with stress can express itself in many ways. Ulcers, indigestion problems and skin problems are a few of the ways. Conditions of prolonged unmanaged stress leaves the body weak and more susceptible to disease, according to Belnap. "The body's ability to monitor or regulate the internal environment is dependent on stress and horomones and the inter-relationship of the physical and mental. I think people have to realize that we are complex," he said. According to Belnap, all areas of life should be included when assessing where stress comes from. There are five areas: physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual. These areas cannot be separated and all of them affect total fitness. Stress has an accumulative affect but people can adapt and recover from high stress and can develop higher levels of stress tolerance, he said. Belnap will be teaching stress management techniques that students can put into practice to help overcomeout-of-control stress. jtarrs.
