The exhibit is open to the public and will be up until April 20. 'Unbuilt Utah' Now On Display If some architects had had their way, downtown Salt Lake City would have been marked by a towering office complex. But the project was scrapped and the architects, who had built a large model of the proposed building that was insured for $8,000, went back to the drawing board. Their efforts, however, were not in vain as the model has become part of an art exhibit that is currently on display at Weber State College. The exhibit is entitled "Unbuilt Utah" and consists of nine buildings that were almost, but not quite, constructed in Utah. Dr. William W. Lew, curator of the art gallery in the Collett Art Building, said, "We can really see the creative process in the models. There is a significant aspect of the architecture legacy that never gets exposure. This exhibition shows that other aspect." The show has models of office complexes that would have stretched far into the Salt Lake City sky, education buildings that would have been, as well as housing complexes and elaborate individual homes. The model for one home, for example, sits below the surface of the earth in what is called an Earth House. Amphitheaters rim both the front and back entrances and large solar collectors help heat the huge home. Another model displays how cities can utilize space between freeway systems for housing complexes. The exhibit will be up until April 20 and is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Al Stone, former WSC instructor in interior design and the person who first came up with the idea for the exhibit, said, "It's really a shame the public never gets to see the buildings that almost were. The city-scape of Salt Lake City would have really been a lot different if these would have been built." Si? Do 5 a 'Golden Pond' Plays At Weber by Dona Skaff Entertainment Editor and by Steve Fifield Staff Reporter The Broadway production of On Golden Pond is currently playing at Weber State College. Support from the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation made possible the Pioneer Memorial Theatre production. The lead parts of Norman and Ethel Thayer were played by Richard Mathews and Josephine Nichols, both members of the Actors' Equity Association. As the curtain opened, the audience was introduced to elaborate scenery that was created for the original Broadway production. The scenery was realistic in every detail, right down to the stone fireplace and the dusty well-used books on the shelf. Since the play was limited to only one set, special effects were used to bring the out-of-doors indoors. The realistic sounds of loons, cars and boats were used to create these effects. The acting of the Equity actors was of the finest calibre. The role of Norman Thayer was rather convincing, as was the role of his wife, Ethel. Billy Ray (played by Joey Borgenicht) acted as a typical 13 year-old but in his attempt to be convincing, and in comparison to the other actors, his performance was rather weak. This portrayal was somewhat expected from an actor of his age. It was difficult not to compare the storyline of the play with the movie, both had their strong and weak points. It was also difficlut not to compare the actors in the play to the actors from the movie. All in all the play was enjoyable as it looked at the real-life experiences of growing up and older.
