Sports Editor The women's athletic programs at Weber State have improved tremendously over the past few years. Women's athletic director Jane Miner has been instrumental in the upgrading of the athletic program. "When I came here there were only 16 scholarships for women and some of those were only tuition waivers," Miner said. "We now have 80 scholarships available and 100 athletes, where we only had 21 then." The quantity isn't the only thing that has increased over the years, but also the quality. The women are competing in seven sports (tennis, cross country, basketball, indoor track, outdoor track, volleyball and golf) in the newly formed Mountain West Athletic Conference, and Weber has been extremely competitive in all the sports. The Lady 'Cats finished second this year in the All-Sports Trophy which is a big improvement from their sixth place finish of last year. "I feel very confident about winning it next year," Miner said. "We have a very strong tennis program that came close to winning the conference this year. I expect big things in track (based on their third-place cross country finish and their championship in indoor track and second place in outdoor track) because they return everybody from a talented team. And in my opinion, I think we will have the best talent in the conference in volleyball next year. It's Ted's (coach Ted Compoc) program now and he has done a super job on scheduling and recruiting the type of players he wants," Miner added. Miner's basketball recruiting has gone well as there will be more new faces than old ones. "This will be the youngest, the smallest and the most inexperienced team I've ever had," Miner said. "But they have tremendous raw talent and the highest desire. I think next year is going to be a very exciting year. We have a good schedule that will allow us to progress and our conference will be very competitive from top to bottom." The women will also be using a smaller basketball next year, and Miner said that the smaller ball will improve the passing and ball handling, which will make the women's game even more exciting. Miner said, "I can't predict what this team is going to do, but I'm happy to have all of these new people and I think it is going to be exciting."Looking at women's athletics as a whole, next year should be another exciting and successful year at Weber. tllllllHill IT TAKES YOU, TOO!!
