Vol. 44 No. 56 Friday, May 25, 1984 ASWSC Constitution Unclear On Supreme Court Guidelines by Steve Fifield Senior Reporter The ASWSC constitution has undergone numerous changes this year in an attempt to clarify the role of student government. The changes have covered nearly every aspect of student government, with one of the exceptions being the supreme court. Section 2 , Article IV of the ASWSC constitution, states, "The membership of the Supreme Court shall be five (5) Student Justices appointed by the President of ASWSC upon advice and consent of the Student Senate and membership is to include an Advisor appointed by the President of the College."On Friday, April 27, Bruce Finch, Charlotte Starks and Alan Frankie, the Supreme Court student justices, voted to allow non-declared majors to campaign for student office. The three mentioned above were the only members of the Supreme Court, with Frankie being appointed in April. Frankie was never approved, "upon advice and consent of the Student Senate," as stated in the constitution. Frankie was appointed by ASWSC President Brad Howell, was allowed to vote in the campaigning issue, and was later approved only by the ASWSC legislative council. The constitution also provides for "an Advisor appointed by the President of the College." Elaine A. Jarrett, assistant vice president for administrative services, said that to the best of her knowledge, " President Brady has never been approached about appointing someone." She said that she wouldn't necessarily be aware of a verbal appointment made by President Brady. Grant Protzman has been serving as the advisor to the Supreme Court, according to Howell. President Brady was not available for comment at press time. The constitution does not provide for a quorum that the Supreme Court members must meet before any court cases can be decided. "It's a little unclear; you have to use common sense. I don't think that we need to change the constitution (to clarify the Supreme Court issue)," said Howell. Thatcher, Bateman chosen Student Senate Approves Commencement Speakers by Marjory Knell Staff Reporter The student senate recently accepted outlines of student speeches for this year's commencement exercises. The outlines were evaluated by the student senate and interviews were given to each commencement speaker candidate. The senate then chose four finalists. After presenting their entire speech to the senate, the candidates were interviewed again, and two of the candidates were then chosen to speak at commencement exercises. The selected speakers were judged on their ability to write and speak effectively before an audience. Stuart Thatcher was chosen as one of the graduating commencement speakers. Upon graduation, Thatcher will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in field artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After completion of basic training, he will be assigned to Frankfurt, West Germany. During an interview with the student senate, Thatcher said, "I will be giving a speech that has humor and not a 'reach for the stars' approach." He will be speaking about the idea that "the only thing typical about Weber State College is that it's not typical." Bob Bateman will join Thatcher on graduation evening as the second commencement speaker. Bateman will be graduating in political science with a minor in business. After graduation, he will be working in real estateinsurance. Bateman said that he "plans on attending law school in the future." In his presentation Bateman will bring back memories at Weber State and will continue on with dreams for tomorrow. Graduation ceremonies will be held on June 8, starting at 6 p.m. in the Dee Events Center, when President Rodney H. Brady will welcome everyone. The processional will begin at 5:40 p.m. Memorial Day weekend starts tomorrow. Have a great three-day vacation! - - K x .. .J - . t ' 5 A? .
