Show 14 Signpost -Tuesday, May 15, 1984 Tracksters Seek Big Sky Crown by Steve Spafford Asst. Sports Editor i 'J. V ft f Farley Gerber became the first Utah native competing for a Utah college to run a sub-four minute mile, as his time of 3:40.2 in the 1500-meters at the Modesto relays Signpost photoSteve Spattord Saturday converts to a 3:57.8 mile. Gerber's time also qualifies him for the NCAA's and the Olympic trials, but he will only run the 3000-meter steeplechase at both. The Big Sky Conference track and field championships will be held in Bozeman, Montana, this weekend and coach Chick Hislop picks Nevada-Reno and the University of Idaho as the early favorites to win this year's title. "Reno and Idaho have a lot of foreign athletes competing in many events," Hislop said, "but out of the schools that have only American athletes on their teams, we have a good chance to win, which would put us third overall." "We should score points in the sprints, hurdles, the distance races, the sprint relay, the triple jump, the long jump and the decathalon," Hislop said. "And we could score in the 800-meters, long jump, pole vault and the mile relay." Steve Baggs, Erwin Stone and Derrick Jackson will compete for Weber in both the 100 and the 200-meter dashes. Stone as the second fastest time in WSC history in the 100 (10.63) and ranks fourth in the conference in the 100. Baggs has the eighth best time in the conference this year in the 100-meters. Stone's time of 20.92 puts in second on the WSC All-Time list and ranks him at fourth in the Big Sky. Farley Gerber will be competing in three events hoping to triple for the Wildcats. His time in last Saturday's Modesto Relays of 3:40.2 makes him the favorite in the 1500-meters. With the, fastest time in the world this year in the 3,000-meter steeplechase of 8:24.72 makes Gerber the favorite there too. In the 5,000-meter Gerber is ranked sixth in the Big Sky in that, his third, event. "No one has ever attempted to triple in these three events," Hislop said, "and no one has ever won three events in one Big Sky meet. I don't expect him to win all three, but depending on how well Farley holds up, he could win two of them and score in the other for us." Dave Griffin is sixth on Weber's Ail-Time list in the 1500 with a time of 3:49.95 which puts him fifth in the Big Sky. Weber's other steeplechasers are Clark Roberts and Darrin Williams. Roberts' best time this year was 8:52.04 which ranks him fourth this year, and Williams has run an 8:55.48 that is the sixth fastest time in the Big Sky. Henry Burkhardt is Weber's best bet in the 10,000'meters because his time of 30:18.44 is the second fastest time this year in the conference. Burkhardt will also double in the 5,000-meters along with Williams and Gerber. Weber has three stong hurdlers competing in the two hurdle races. Shawn Dorr, who holds the school record in the 110-meter high hurdles at 14.25, will compete in both the high hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Dave Chowen has the best time for Weber in the intermediate hurdles with his school record time of 52.36, which ranks him fifth in the conference. Dorr's time of 52.84 is eighth best in the Big Sky.
