Williams Signpost Movie Reviewer "Mother Lode" takes place in the upper northwestern Alaskan frontier. It is billed as "the next great adventure film." This movie reviewer feels, however, that in essence this film is just another formula of "The Man from Snowy River." "Mother Lode" contains many similarities to "Snowy River." Both movies feature a beautiful young lady, a tough, aspiring young man, gorgeous mountain scenery, a star who plays two parts, and a quest for a very illusive goal. The fact that this film is similar to "Snowy River" does not detract from its enjoyability, However. It is filled with beautiful scenery, suspense, and humor which create a pleasurable movie experience.Charlton Heston stars as a crusty old Scottish miner. He shows his seasoned acting ability in portraying this character. The plot of "Mother Lode" concerns a missing surveyer. It focuses on the journey his friends take to the place where he was last seen. Along the way, his friends meet the miner, (Heston) who claims to own the "Mother Lode," a main source of gold. "Mother Lode" is a fair adventure story. It is not entirely original, but is quite entertaining. Unfortunately, the screenplay is poorly done and has a lot of gaps in spots, particularly at the beginning of the movie. Here, scenes are thrown in simply to fill up space, which creates a lack of depth in the story. The show is popular, however, so be prepared for a crowded theater. The film is showing at the Mann City Plaza 4 on Grant Avenue. |
