Show Discipline Program Presented by Cindy Griffiths Staff Reporter For the past two years Dr. Benjamin Noid, professor of communication at Weber State College, and Dr. Lionel Brady, teacher in the Salt Lake City School District, have been preparing a program of discipline and improvement in the classroom learning atmosphere in public schools. The main objective of the program is to involve administrators, parents, teachers and students in the student's discipline problems. "Discipline is usually approached in a fragmented way, but an effective disipline program must involve parents, administrators, students and teachers." states Dr. Noid. The disruptive student must be handled effectively so learning can take place for all students in the classroom. If the disruptive student is removed from the classroom, an acceptable alternative educational enviroment must be provided. "Emphasis should be placed on replacing the disruptive student back in to the regular classroom activities as soon as the disruptive behavior has been constructively modified," Dr. Noid said. Some possibilities are the alternative classroom, alternative schools, and computer self-dictorial programs."We're concerned with creating and maintaining a productive learning environment," said Dr. Noid, "The problem is so complex and so long-standing that it's difficult to find a simple solution." Dr. Noid also suggests that the parents of the good students must be supportive and must have a chance to become involved. The Grant for Comprehensive Discipline hasn't been approved at this time, but it has gone through the Grants and Contract Office where Dr. Allan Dayley has presented the grant to Dr. Bell, U.S. Secretary of Education. Dr. Noid has had unique capability and experience in the area of human relations, problem solving and group facilitation. Dr. Brady has spent many years working with disruptive and disturbed children in special class situations. Both men have had extensive ex-periencew in public school education andadministration. I thought I was on my own, alone in that slightly scary, very romantic world of trousseaus, honeymoons and reservations. Then I saw an ad for ZCMI's Wedding Registry; imagine, professional wedding consultants to register my china, silver, linen and housewares choices. They offered all the help I needed to create the wedding I've dreamed of. ZCMI's Wedding Registry . . . making romance practical (293). |
