Show 14 Tuesday, October 19, 1982 SpORTS "raw Vikes bow to 'Cats by Lisa Wright Sports Editor After four straight weeks of being on the shy side of a winning score, the Wildcats came up with a very crucial win in Portland, Oregon. The win was not only crucial in terms of the season win-loss record, but important in terms of team morale. The Wildcats badly needed the win and on a raining, dismal evening in Portland they were able to pull it off. Both teams' games were riddled with mistakes. Three of the four successful Weber scoring drives were set up by Portland State turnovers. Overall each side wound up with an even four turnovers a piece. The main difference that gave Weber the edge was that PSU was unable to capitalize on the WSC turnovers. Statistically speaking, Portland was ahead of Weber in every category except for three; return yardage, Weber had a total of 40 compared to PSU's 22; penalties, Weber had eight for 89 j Y " ' I LiJ . ;x r' .: ' Jx J " v-. .J I 4 .VV ' '1 i I j ; I I photo by JeHery Bybee Continuing to build their winning tradition, the Wildcat Volleyball team landed three big Mountain West Athletic Conference wins this last weekend in Ogden. On October 13, Weber came out on top of Idaho State with straight games of 19-17, 15-12, 15-10. Friday's action was against Montana. The ladies were victorious with scores of 6-15, 15-10, 15-2 and 15-9. The final game of the weekend was played Saturday against Montana State. Weber won that match in three straight games of 15-12, 15-6 and 15-5. In MWAC play, the Wildcats moved into second place behind undefeated Portland State. yards while Portland only suffered four for 55 yards; and the most important category---the score. Weber finished out on top with a final of 20-6. The first score of the game was made off of a Portland State mistake. Vic Fletcher, a WSC free safety, intercepted a pass made by Portland's quarterback Bryan Mitchell. That interception marked the 16th time that a Mitchell pass has been ' intercepted this season. The turnover eventually led to a 37-yard Ruzek field goal. During that scoring drive the 'Cats pulled off a bit of acting that would have made William Wyler proud. On a fourth down and five situation Weber was apparently going to try for a 52 yard field goal. But appearances can be deceiving. As the offensive line got into formation, Roger Ruzek picked up the kicking tee and ran to the , side yelling that he had the wrong one. As he threw the tee off the field, 'holder' Roger Wilson took the snap from center and threw the ball to Ruzek who just happened to be waiting near the sideline. With that reception Ruzek was able to make the first down. A few plays later Ruzek entered again to kick a real field goal giving the 'Cats the lead 3-0. - The next score didn't come until there was 1:52 left in the first half. This scoring drive also came off of a Portland State turnover. PSU punter Randy Twidwell fumbled the snap from center and Carl Wilson recovered on the PSU 22 yard line. This was Wilson's first game of the season. Three plays later Kelvin Matthews moved into the endzone. The PAT was good making the score 10-0 Weber State. With only moments left in the half the Portland State team was suddenly shot with a burst of adrenaline. They moved the ball from their own 20 yard line all the way down to the WSC five. They were unsuccessful, however, in moving into the endzone. The end of the half marked the 14th consecutive quarter that Portland had gone scoreless. That record wasn't to stand for much longer. Seven minutes into the third quarter the PSU offense moved the ball into the endzone. The PAT Cook wins For those of you who thought that last week's "Gridiron Game" was going to be too easy, shame on you. There is always the possibility of an upset. Apparently some of you didn't allow for that. The contest was marked by three big upsets that pretty well messed up everyone's entry. Few people picked Tennessee to defeat Alabama, and almost everyone thought that Air Force would defeat, Colorado State. The Montana State - win over Boise State did not catch as many entries off guard, but it was still enough to cause many good entries to slip down a rung. Winning first place was Freddie Cook, a member of the Weber State football team. The game went back and forth for quite a while but penalties and turnovers kept both teams out of the endzone. On a fumbled punt, the third costly turnover for Portland State, the 'Cats were able to put the ball in big top prize in the "Gridiron Game." Cook finished with an 8-2 record. Second place goes to Rick Nelson, who also finished 8-2. History professor Lee Sather garnered third place with an 8-2 record. Sather was one of only three people who correctly picked Tennessee over Alabama. Even after invoking the tiebreaker rule, there was a tie for fourth place. Trent Lamb and Thomas .Gopher each finished with 7-3 records. All of these winners may pick their prizes up in the Signpost office, UB 267. Our football experts didn't fare so well, as the best record among them was a 7-3. Sports editor Lisa Wright came closest to predicting the score of the BYU-Hawaii game of any entry.
