Clampett putted first, and rolled in a trickling 14 footer for birdie. Gove's putt couldn't have looked any easier after that, but he dropped his, too, and they approached the 18th all even. With a modest gallery watching from behind the slightly elevated green, Clampett dirdied with a twisting downhill putt, and again the pressure was on Gove. And again, Gove came through with a great birdie of his own. A seemingly impossible topper to Saturday's heroics came on Sunday, when Clampett and Gove renewed their battle. Clampett owned a one stroke lead after the two rounds played Saturday, but Gove was one shot better Sunday arid the two began a playoff for the medalist title. "Bobbie wanted to win the tournament badly," said golf coach Mac Madsen after the tournament. "He didn't want to lose on his home course after just playing in the Masters. He felt it might have been embarassing," and he's a proud young man." Madsen was echoing the thoughts of Gove, who wasn't too dissappointed because he had finally regained adeptness after a slump had robbed him of possible good finishes at the All-American and Far-West Tournaments. ' Both golfers have the utmost respect for each other. Seldom did they utter more than a "good shot" or "nice drive" to each other. Gove, who is equally complacent off the course, mingled sparingly with watchers, but was relaxed enough to make a humorous observation of an errant tee shot by a New Mexico playing companion. . "What can I say about Clampett, except that he's a child prodigy?" Gove once exclaimed during the idle winter. Gove might admire Clampett's talent, but it is expressed with the dignified knowledge that he too is a force to be reckoned with. Mike Gove is probably the best athlete this institution has ever produced. As an All-American, a member of the U.S. Walker Cup Team, and as a gentleman, he may someday make a lasting mark on the professional golf circuit as well. As far as he and Bobby Clampett go, you can just about count on it. 108 on May 10 at 7 p.m. If there are any questions concerning the game or the club, call 621-6074 and ask for Ann Marie. CLASS! Peter Markes, Greg Schmerhorn, Kay Barney, and Kevin Kempin all won their respective matches. Behind Weber were Nevada-Las Vegas, Boise State, Idaho, and Utah State. The .men play next at the Big Sky meet on May 3-5. The Wildcat track team finished third in their own meet despite the abscence of some of their more prominant performers, who were competing in the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California. Javier Chavez shattered the school record there in the 1500 meters with a tie of 3:45.2, and missed by two-tenths of a second a birth in the national meet upcoming later this spring. Jorge Ruiz also eclipsed the old school mark with a 14:15.5 clocking in the 5000 meters, but finished second in the race. This offered proof of the talent participating in the meet. Rex Honholdt also bettered his old personal mark in the steeplechase. The women's softball team finished fourth in the Reno Invitational over the weekend, winning four and losing two games. The women won the opener against San Francisco, shutting out the Dons 4-0 on a fine Diana Mangano pitching performance. The team then lost to Oregon by a 2-1 score, committing three untimely errors. A 10-1 clobbering of So. Oregon State was next, as the Lady 'Cats pounded out 13 hits and capitalized on eight So. Oregon State errors. The women then zipped past Sonoma State by a 15-9 score, collecting 12 hits. Annette Johnson had four RBI's in that game, while Kathy Miller added two.
