BOOKSTORE April 24 to May 1 Women slightly to considerably over the traditional college student age who migut not otherwise attend college are being helped at Weber State College by a new women's reentry program. Dr. M. Day Evans, dean of Student 'affairs, says that today yeomen past the traditional 18-21 age are coming to college in increasing numbers. Very often these women approach the experience with fear and feelings of inadequacy. Some are actually terrified and overcome by feelings of inadequacy. Dr. Evans said such people feel they will be unable to compete with younger students, that because of their age they will be conspicuous and remain isolated. Some fear they will have forgotten too much of what they have learned. Dr. Evans and her colleagues decided something needed to be done to help these "re-entry women" through their early insecurities and to provide a support system during their adjustment period. That, it was decided, would encourage more women to return to school, and also help them to remain and become a part of the college community. A start was made last summer with a group of 10 who appeared to need group support and might St . ive WSC GYM 7:00 p.m. not have returned otherwise to school for the training they needed. Ages ranged from 35 to 50 and none of the 10 lacked diplomas. Each received individual advisement and counseling and then went through group training. The gratifying thing, Dr. Evans said, is that all 10 are still in school. - Now a continuing program is going on which includes getting periodic computer lists of all women 26 and older who are new admissions or re-admissions. Appointments are made for each of these women to meet with a counselor for advisement and counseling purposes. During these sessions they receive academic advisement and help in selecting courses for the upcoming quarter. They are encouraged to join with a group seminar consisting of 10 to 12 students which functions as a support group and provides a forum where they can explore their feelings and adjustments. Each group has co-, directors-one professional and ; one student. Dr. Evans says she and her staff find some need little help to get started, others much more. Also working to direct the reentry work are Antoinette Weight, assistant dean of student affairs, and Mary Jo LaTulippe, counselor. Dr. Evans says they have arrived at a stage where they are willing and ready to engage in active recruitment of older women who have wanted to return to college but have been fearful. They are willing to go out to women's groups and present material on what is and can be done. Is Weber State pioneering in its re-entry work? Not entirely, Dr. Evans says but it is helping along with such traditionally women's schools as Vassar, to ease the return to college of those who have been hesitant.
